The upper dunes are completely closed from March 1st to July as it is a breeding area. You can only go completely around, partly also via the road! It is annoying when Komoot keeps trying to lead you back to the closed path and doesn't suggest an alternative! The announcement that the path is 1.2 km to our right doesn't help!

I did the tour yesterday and discovered that the recommended route is outdated. Several bike paths have been demolished and replaced with new ones, which aren't signposted. You have to search for them, but it's worth it. And always remember: if there's a dead-end sign, you can't go any further. Still worth seeing!

Be sure to drive through the dunes, there is always a different view, sometimes with fantastic flowering heather, then again with lots of temporary water holes, fantastic!

What role does the Noordhollands Duinreservaat play in water management?

The Noordhollands Duinreservaat is crucial for drinking water production for almost all of North Holland and Texel. Since 1920, groundwater has been extracted from the dunes. Areas like De Kwal Water Outlet are where pre-purified river water is infiltrated into the sandy soil for natural filtration. These infiltration areas are rich in birds, fish, and plants due to the abundant water, contributing to the reserve's biodiversity.

Are there hiking trails near these natural monuments?

Absolutely. The Noordhollands Duinreservaat features numerous hiking trails that allow you to explore its natural monuments. For easy walks, you can find routes like 'Low-threshold North Holland routes - Dunes, views and heath in the Bergerbos' or 'Dune and Beach Trail – Behave Like Animals Beach Sign loop from Castricum'.
