In 1858, the Virgin Mary, the mother of Jesus, appeared to the girl Bernadette in Lourdes, in the south of France. In the grotto, which is world-famous today, a statue of Mary was erected, and millions of believers make a pilgrimage there every year to seek relief or healing in the holy spring water. Around the turn of the century, replicas of the Grotto of Lourdes were created in many places in Europe. These Lourdes grottoes are places of devotion, silence and prayer. The Lourdes Grotto at St. Anna-Stift Kroge is even more, namely a place of resistance against National Socialism. When Christian crosses were banned by a government decree, the nuns created this Lourdes Grotto and successfully hid their cross here. The Lourdes Grotto on Pickerweg The Lourdes Grotto, which can be seen directly from Pickerweg, offers a sublime sight. It has been in this place for over 70 years and still invites pilgrims, sisters and secular people to worship. The statue of Mary With her white robe and blue veil, the Madonna figure corresponds to the description of Saint Bernadette of Lourdes. Fresh floral decorations lie at her feet.
