Perfect bird watching can be done from this tower. In the years 1999-2001, the Old Elbe was desludged as part of the EU-Life project "Renaturalisation of the river, backwater and floodplain forest", whereby the southwestern stretch of water could only be desludged to a small extent. The desludging will secure habitats for fire-bellied toads and tree frogs as well as for the more than 140 species of breeding birds that have so far been recorded in the Kliekener Aue area. Among them are such rare species as kingfishers, sedge warblers and cranes.

The Old Elbe in Klieken forms a complex of water habitats with the Saarensee and the Kurzen litter. By separating meander curves from the river as a result of flooding, first the Saarensee and later the Old Elbe were separated from the river. 97 hectares of the nature reserve are designated as a total reserve and left to their natural development. The nature reserve is part of the "Dessau-Wörlitzer Elbauen" and the EU bird sanctuary "Middle Elbe including Steckby-Lödderitzer Forst". The area, which is almost completely surrounded by the "Middle Elbe" landscape protection area, has been under protection since the end of 2003. The "Saarenbruch" nature reserve, which was designated on May 1, 1961, has merged into it.
