In the Gertruden Chapel in a former cemetery, some of Barlach's most important and beautiful sculptures are on display (the "Laughing Old Woman", the "Reading Monastery Student", "Doubter", "Reunion"), and in the garden there is the rediscovered "Mother Earth" and sculptures by other artists. Ernst Barlach: Born in 1870, Barlach grew up in the Hamburg area and Mecklenburg, studied art and did this and that; was unsuccessful for a long time until he traveled to Russia at the age of 36 and brought inspiration and ideas from there/from the folk art there. Since then, Barlach created down-to-earth, authentic, earth-rooted, often clunky figures and was successful with them. At 40 he went to Güstrow, at 56 he had his studio house built, and died at 68. He created impressive sculptures, monuments, graphics and plays. The two Barlach museums are highly recommended.

Located not far from Güstrow town centre, the Gothic Gertruden Chapel was opened in 1953 as the first Barlach Museum in Güstrow. The chapel houses around 30 sculptures and reliefs by Ernst Barlach, all of which were created during his time in Güstrow. Güstrow Cathedral is part of the North German brick Gothic style and has a rich interior from the late Romanesque period to the modern era, including Ernst Barlach's Floating Man. It is spread out on the southern edge of the city and exudes a great sense of calm. The cathedral square is a special ensemble in the city. Here is the oldest school in Mecklenburg, the former court of Wallenstein, and within sight we find the Renaissance castle. The cathedral was founded in 1226 and consecrated in 1335. In 1568 it became the Protestant court church and burial place for the Güstrow royal family until 1695, when the Güstrow line died out. The cathedral was last renovated in the spirit of neo-Gothic from 1865 to 1868. Source: https://dom-guestrow.de/geschichte.html

Smaller than expected but a beautiful cultural landscape all around.

The high flow speed and the fallen pasture give the inconspicuous stream its very own charm. :)

The "Floating Angel" (also known as "The Floating One") seen here in Güstrow Cathedral, a famous work of art by Ernst Barlach (1870 to 1938), can also be admired in the Rhineland, in the Antoniterkirche in Cologne. See https://www.komoot.de/highlight/3597904
