Nice Hike, we did it as a family. The trail is starting to get a little bit abandoned, the waterfall is no longer visible (as of June 29, 2024) due to a collapse. Anyways, we enjoyed the beautiful forest.

Very difficult path, but worth it! Lots of dilapidated bridges and stairs. Sturdy shoes are definitely recommended. The path runs downstream on the right side (unlike what is shown on the Komoot map). Shortly before the waterfall there is another wild suspension bridge.

Beautiful waterfall in the Rio Savegre. Access via two dilapidated bridges is a bit adventurous.

Good footwear is a basic requirement for this tour, since the planks are metal grids and transitions are very damp and slippery.

Páramo offers a selection of 13 hiking routes, catering to various preferences. These include 2 easy trails, 10 moderate trails, and 1 more challenging option.
The Páramo region experiences distinct wet and dry seasons. The dry season, typically from December to April, offers more stable weather and clearer skies, making it ideal for hiking. During the wet season, trails can be muddy and cloud cover more persistent, though the lush vegetation is at its peak.
Páramo is characterized by its high-altitude cloud forest environment. Expect cool temperatures, often ranging from 10-20°C (50-68°F), and frequent mist or fog, especially in the mornings and late afternoons. Rain showers are common, even during the dry season, so be prepared for changing conditions.
Given the variable weather, layering is key. We recommend waterproof and windproof outer layers, a warm fleece or jacket, and moisture-wicking base layers. Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots with good grip are essential for the often-muddy and uneven terrain. Don't forget a hat, gloves, and sun protection, as the sun can be intense at higher altitudes when it breaks through the clouds.
Yes, Páramo has easy hiking trails suitable for a relaxed outing. An excellent option is the Savegre River – Waterfall on the Río Savegre loop from San Gerardo, which is 6.2 km long and takes about 1 hour 50 minutes to complete, leading to a beautiful waterfall.
While most trails are moderate, there is one difficult route for those seeking a greater challenge. These trails often involve significant elevation changes and can be longer, requiring good physical fitness and preparation.
Many of the easy to moderate trails in Páramo are suitable for families. Routes that are shorter in distance and have less elevation gain, such as the Savegre River – Waterfall on the Río Savegre loop from San Gerardo, are great choices for families with children, offering beautiful scenery without being overly strenuous.
Absolutely! The region is known for its waterfalls. The Savegre River – Waterfall on the Río Savegre loop from San Gerardo is a popular choice that leads directly to a waterfall. You can also explore the San Gerardo de Dota Waterfall or the Waterfall in Reserva Forestal Los Santos.
Yes, many of the trails in Páramo are designed as loops, allowing you to start and end at the same point. Examples include the La Quebrada Cloud Forest Trail – The Oak of Hotel Savegre loop from Zapotal and the La Quebrada Cloud Forest Trail – Mirador SIWÕ' loop from Zapotal.
Páramo's cloud forests are rich in biodiversity. Hikers often spot a variety of bird species, including the resplendent quetzal, especially in areas around San Gerardo de Dota. Keep an eye out for unique flora and fauna adapted to this high-altitude, misty environment.
The hiking trails in Páramo are highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 4.9 stars from over 90 reviews. Hikers frequently praise the stunning cloud forest scenery, the refreshing river valleys, and the rewarding views of waterfalls. Beyond the natural beauty, you'll find several points of interest. The Savegre River is a prominent feature, and the Cerro La Asunción Trailhead serves as a starting point for exploring higher elevations. The region's cloud forests themselves are a significant natural landmark.
