The Stechbahn is much more than just a square – it is the historical and social heart of Celle's old town. It connects the majestic castle with the market square and the town church. In the 15th and 16th centuries, this area served the Dukes of Celle as a venue for knightly tournaments, the so-called "Ringstechen" or "Lanzenstechen". In memory of this time, a horseshoe is embedded in the pavement (near the town church). It marks the spot where Duke Otto II died in an accident during a tournament in 1471.
