Until 1970, Salaberg Castle and its park were closed to the public. However, following a lease agreement between the municipality of Haag and its owner, Hermann Saurma-Jeltsch, work began on developing the park and opened it as a recreational facility in 1973. However, it had to be closed briefly due to foot-and-mouth disease. In the following decades, the zoo was continually expanded to include new animal species, built attractions such as a bear enclosure, the Bird Song Trail, and a children's playground, and opened the Jochteich pond for fishing.
