Baumburg Monastery is a former Augustinian Canons Regular monastery in Altenmarkt an der Alz (Traunstein district), which was dissolved in 1803 during the secularization. Today, Baumburg is also a Catholic deanery encompassing the parishes of the northern Chiemgau region. The Baroque transformation of the monastery's formerly Gothic buildings began around 1600 with a renovation of the medieval church. During this renovation, the towers received their characteristic onion domes. Provosts Michael Doegger (reigned 1688–1706) and Patricius Stöttner (reigned 1707–1737) commissioned further alterations and new construction of the monastery buildings. To mark the 600th anniversary of its consecration, the architect Franz Alois Mayr from Trostberg built the present-day Church of St. Margaret in the Rococo style, beginning in 1755, featuring delicate stucco work and frescoes. In 1803, the abbey was dissolved by the Bavarian state during the secularization process. By 1812, the abbey buildings, farm buildings, and the abbey's land had been auctioned off. The abbey church then served as the parish church of Altenmarkt an der Alz. Many of the monastery buildings were demolished. Since 1910, one wing of the complex has served as the parish rectory. Another wing served for many years as a retreat for the English Ladies. Today, it houses a privately owned seminar hotel, which is popular with choirs and orchestras. The Baumburg monastery brewery, founded in 1612, is also now privately owned.

A very small place that is particularly interesting because of its branch church. The pilgrimage church was rebuilt several times and probably originally served as a place of refuge. You can still see a bricked-up window three meters high that was intended as an escape entrance. There is also a really beautiful forest adventure trail that starts in town.

A church with a long history. A small booklet in front of the covered entrance tells about it. Unfortunately the church is rarely open. But you can do it like the pilgrims used to do - the barred window on the west side allows a view inside, even if the church itself is closed.
