Please note that this bike/MTB highlight is off the official cycle path network. In the national park, cycling is only permitted on the paths that have been approved for this purpose, in order to protect the sensitive habitats of animals and plants and to avoid conflicts between user groups. Therefore I ask you to explore this highlight only on foot. Currently, according to the 1992 regulation and the 2012 amendment, cycling is only allowed on the following roads: 1. Hirschbichlstraße (state road 2099) and from the Bindalm bus stop to the alpine huts on the Bindalm; 2. Eiskar forest road to the fork in the path to the Schartennalm; 3. Eckau-Forststraße to Eckau-Alm with turnoff to the Schwarzederer-Wendeplatte; 4. Schappachstraße and Hammerstielstraße to Kühroint - turning point in front of the Archenkanzel - and forest road to Herrenroint; 5. Gotzenstraße and Hochbahnweg to Gotzenalm and access to the Stahlhaus; 6. Ligeretstrasse. The supplement to approved cycle paths from 2012 is in the Official Journal for the district of Berchtesgadener Land No. 20 from 05/15/2012 on page 127ff. (https://www.lra-bgl.de/t/das-landratsamt/amtsblaetter/). The ordinance is based on Art. 31 Para. 1 and Art. 43 Para. 2 No. 3 of the Bavarian Nature Conservation Act (BayNatSchG). We would be very grateful for your help to protect nature! If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us. https://www.nationalpark-berchtesgaden.de/

From the Königsee you go to the first station St. Bartholomä, from here it is not very far to the Kührointalm. It is also a good idea to hike back to Königsee (T3-T2) with beautiful views of the Königsee awaiting you. Who continues to Salet Station! There, after a short hike, the Obersee awaits and rewards you with beautiful nature and Germany's highest waterfall (Röthbachfall).

Until motor navigation began on the lake, rowing boats were the only means of transport. The construction of the now defunct railway connection from Berchtesgaden to Schönau am Königssee, district of Königssee, which was completed on May 29, 1909, led to the expectation of an increase in visitors to Königssee due to the improved transport connections. The time to decide about the introduction of motor shipping was pressing. With the consent of Prince Regent Luitpold, the Supreme Court Master's staff ordered four boats in January 1909, namely an electric boat and two petroleum-fired steam engine boats and a small electric boat exclusively for court service purposes. Motor shipping on the Königssee was finally opened on July 15, 1909 with the electric motor boat Accumulator supplied by Siemens-Schuckert. It held 38 people, was 12 m long and 2.15 m wide. The hull and cabin were made of mahogany. The engine power was about 15 hp.

The most popular lake is Lake Königssee, renowned for its emerald-green water, fjord-like setting, and electric boat tours. Other highly regarded lakes include Obersee, known for its stunning reflections, and Hintersee, famous for its romantic atmosphere and the enchanting Zauberwald (Magic Forest).
Yes, several lakes offer family-friendly activities. Lake Königssee is popular for its electric boat tours and the easy walk to Malerwinkel viewpoint. Hintersee is also great for families, with easy walks around the lake and opportunities to rent rowing or pedal boats. The Zauberwald (Magic Forest) near Hintersee is particularly enchanting for children.
The lakes boast diverse natural features. Königssee is famous for its deep, fjord-like character and the echo wall. Obersee offers breathtaking mirror-like reflections of the mountains and is home to Germany's highest waterfall, Röthbach Waterfall. Hintersee is surrounded by the mystical Zauberwald with its wild streams and cascading waterfalls. Funtensee is unique as a karst lake, known for its extreme temperatures and the underground drainage through Teufelsloch.
The most prominent historical and cultural site is St. Bartholomew Pilgrimage Church on Königssee. This picturesque church with its distinctive red onion domes is only accessible by boat and was once a royal hunting lodge. It offers a unique blend of history and stunning natural beauty.
There are numerous hiking opportunities. From St. Bartholomä on Königssee, you can hike to the Eiskapelle (Ice Chapel). A short walk from Königssee's southern end leads to the more secluded Obersee, with trails around the lake and to Röthbach Waterfall. Hintersee offers an easy circular walk. For experienced hikers, reaching Funtensee involves a significant trek across the Steinernes Meer plateau. For more hiking routes, explore the Hiking around Berchtesgaden guide.
Yes, swimming is possible in several lakes, though the water is generally quite cold due to their alpine nature. Popular spots for a refreshing dip include the flat beach at the Königsbach waterfall on Königssee and various points around Hintersee. Funtensee is primarily a hiking destination and less suited for swimming due to its remote location and extreme temperatures.
The best time to visit depends on your preferred activities. Summer (June to September) offers the warmest weather for swimming, boating, and extensive hiking. Spring (April to May) brings lush greenery and blooming wildflowers, while autumn (October) showcases vibrant fall foliage. Winter transforms the landscape into a snowy wonderland, with opportunities for ice skating on Hintersee and winter walks, though some higher trails may be inaccessible.
Yes, if you're looking for a more serene experience away from the main crowds of Königssee, Obersee is an excellent choice. It's a short, approximately 30-minute walk from the Salet Alm (accessible by boat on Königssee) and offers a peaceful atmosphere with stunning reflections. Hintersee, while popular, can also offer quieter moments, especially during off-peak hours or seasons.
Beyond hiking, you can enjoy electric boat tours on Lake Königssee, rent rowing or pedal boats on Hintersee, or simply relax and take in the scenic views from various viewpoints like Malerwinkel. The region also offers cycling and running routes. You can find more options in the Cycling around Berchtesgaden and Running Trails around Berchtesgaden guides.
Yes, the lakes are generally well-connected by public transport. Königssee and Hintersee are accessible by bus, though parking can be limited, especially during peak season. Using public transport is often recommended to avoid parking difficulties and contribute to preserving the natural environment of Berchtesgaden National Park.
Funtensee is unique for being Germany's coldest spot, holding the record for the lowest recorded temperature. Located at 1601 meters on the Steinernes Meer plateau, it's a small karst lake with no surface outlet, and its water drains underground. Reaching it requires a significant hike, making it a rewarding destination for experienced hikers seeking a unique natural phenomenon and stunning alpine scenery.
Yes, there are options for dining and accommodation. Near St. Bartholomä on Königssee, you'll find a restaurant serving local specialties like freshly smoked trout. The Kärlingerhaus mountain hut is located on the shore of Funtensee, providing a resting spot and starting point for mountain tours. Various cafes and restaurants are also available near the main access points of Königssee and Hintersee.
