The Carew River is a beautiful part of the Daugleddau Estuary Region. Teh ever-changing tides here lead to ever-changing views in this scenic and tranquil part of the national park.

The Carew mill pond fills through open flood gates as the tide rises. At high tide the doors are closed and the pond empties through sluices under the mill as the tide drops, driving two undershot water wheels. (Wikipedia)

Carew Castle was built in the late 11th century by the constable of Pembroke Castle, Gerald de Windsor. Archaeologists have found traces of an Iron Age settlement near the castle, as well as Roman pottery. (Pembrokeshire Coast National Park)

The first mill in Carew dates from 1542. The current building probably dates from the early 19th century and has been restored by the National Park Authority, which leases the castle and tidal mill. (Pembrokeshire Coast National Park)

Great to get the old mill techniques explained. Unfortunately we didn't have enough time.

£20 for a bit of ruin is relatively high. Along with the Tide Mill it was okay. If you only want to do a short hike, just walk past the outside...you can also go to the mill.

Yes, the area is great for families. The Carew Millpond walk is a very popular choice. It's a short, flat 1-mile (1.6 km) loop around the water with fantastic views of the castle, perfect for little legs. Kids also often enjoy crabbing off the wall near the Tidal Mill.
The main circular path around the Carew Millpond is specifically designed to be accessible. It is approximately one mile long, mostly level, and surfaced, making it well-suited for both wheelchairs and pushchairs. This trail offers excellent views of Carew Castle and the Tidal Mill.
Dogs are welcome on many trails in the area, but you should keep them on a lead, especially near farmland with livestock and in wildlife-rich areas like the Millpond. The nearby Coed Canaston Wood is a popular spot for dog walkers, offering a network of woodland paths.
There is a dedicated car park for Carew Castle and Tidal Mill, which is the most convenient starting point for the Millpond walk and other nearby trails. It's a pay-and-display car park, and the fee often contributes to the upkeep of the site.
The region has several excellent loop trails. For a moderate circular route, the Carew / Cresswell Quay loop is a fantastic 5.1-mile (8.2 km) option that takes you through the beautiful estuary landscape. For a shorter loop, the 4-mile (6.5 km) hike around Carew follows quiet country lanes and fields.
For those seeking a longer walk, the Cresswell River trail is a moderate 6.4-mile (10.2 km) hike that requires a good level of fitness. It follows the river through a mix of woodland and open fields, offering a rewarding experience away from the main castle area.
Carew is located inland, so you can't join the Pembrokeshire Coast Path directly from the village. However, it's only a short drive away. You can drive to nearby coastal points like Tenby or Saundersfoot to the east, or Pembroke Dock to the west, and access the trail from there.
The Carew Millpond and estuary are a haven for birdwatchers. Keep an eye out for wading birds like redshank and curlew, as well as resident swans. The area is also known for its bat population, with several species visible on summer evenings. The wider Pembrokeshire Coast National Park is home to rare birds and marine life like seals and porpoises.
Most of the dedicated walking paths, especially the footpaths through fields and woodlands like the Cresswell River trail, are not suitable for cycling. However, the quiet country lanes that connect many of the routes can be pleasant for a leisurely bike ride. For dedicated cycling, you might explore the nearby Celtic Trail.
