This is a perfect viewpoint to see the River Ystwyth as it meanders westwards towards the sea at Aberystwyth. In summer, the view is fantastic green and wild. In autumn, the colours change to oranges and browns, so it's well worth visiting in any season.

A bit of a scramble to get to - across roots and rocks - but a delightful waterfall that’s very much off the main path.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there many circular walks around Trawsgoed?

Yes, the area is excellent for circular hikes. Many routes start from villages like Pont-rhyd-y-groes or explore specific areas like the Hafod Estate. For a longer, more challenging loop, consider the Chain Bridge and Gothic Arch – Peiran Falls loop, which covers over 12 km of varied terrain.

Are the hiking trails in Trawsgoed suitable for families?

Definitely. There are many family-friendly options, especially along the river. The Ystwyth Trail has a pleasant, traffic-free section of four miles from Llanilar to the Black Covert picnic area which is ideal for a family outing. The trails at Black Covert itself are also great for shorter legs.

Can I bring my dog on the trails?

Trawsgoed is a great place to walk with a dog. Many trails, like those in Black Covert and along the Ystwyth Trail, are dog-friendly. However, you will be walking through farmland with livestock, so always keep your dog on a lead and under control. Be aware that some nature reserves, like Cors Caron, may have specific rules, so check local signage.

What are the walking trails like at Black Covert?

Black Covert offers two main trails. The 'Ystwyth Riverside Walk' is an easy 1.7-mile (2.7 km) path through woodland by the river, which is especially beautiful when the bluebells are out in spring. For more of a challenge, the 'Birch Grove Woodland Walk' is a moderate 2.2-mile (3.5 km) hike that climbs to a viewpoint atop an ancient hillfort.

Are there any walks with waterfalls near Trawsgoed?

Yes, the region has some beautiful waterfalls. A great option for seeing them is the Rheidol Falls – Rheidol Reservoir South Side loop. This moderate 9.3 km walk takes you through the scenic Rheidol valley where you can see the falls.

What is the terrain like on the Trawsgoed trails?

The terrain is quite varied. You'll find gentle, flat riverside paths along the Ystwyth Trail, which are perfect for easy walks. In areas like the Hafod Estate and Black Covert, you can expect woodland trails with some moderate climbs and descents. Overall, the area offers a good mix of easy and moderate routes, with very few technically difficult sections.

How many hiking trails are there around Trawsgoed?

There are over 140 hiking routes to explore around Trawsgoed. These range from short, easy strolls along the river to more demanding moderate hikes through the surrounding hills and historic estates, so there's a walk for every ability level.

What do other hikers enjoy about the Trawsgoed area?

The area is highly regarded by the komoot community. Hikers often praise the peaceful riverside paths, the well-preserved historic features within the Hafod Estate, and the beautiful woodland scenery. The variety of walks, from easy family strolls to more moderate loops, is also a frequently mentioned highlight.

Is it possible to access the Trawsgoed Estate for walking?

While the main Trawsgoed Mansion is privately owned, a network of public footpaths and bridleways crosses the wider estate lands. These paths allow you to explore the scenic parkland and surrounding countryside. Routes through areas like Black Covert, formerly part of the estate, are publicly accessible.

What is the best time of year to hike in Trawsgoed?

Trawsgoed offers great hiking year-round, but spring and autumn are particularly special. In spring, the woodlands, especially at Black Covert, are carpeted in bluebells. Autumn brings spectacular colours to the forests. Summer is perfect for enjoying the riverside paths, though it can be busier.

Are there any pubs or cafes near the walking trails?

The immediate Trawsgoed area is quite rural, so options are limited directly on the trails. You will need to drive to nearby villages or back towards Aberystwyth for a wider selection of pubs and cafes to relax in after your hike.

How do the walks on the Hafod Estate compare to those at Black Covert?

Both offer fantastic woodland and river scenery, but with a different focus. The Hafod Estate walks are known for their 'Picturesque' historical landscape, featuring follies like a Gothic Arch and Chain Bridge. Black Covert offers more naturalistic woodland trails, with one leading to an ancient hillfort, and is a great spot for a riverside picnic.
