Llyn Cau

Highlight • Viewpoint

Llyn Cau has an ambience all of its own. This is a beautiful high mountain pool watched over by the frowning cliffs of Craig Cwm Amarch and Penygadair, Cadair Idris' main summit.

Like Snowdon's Glaslyn, legend tells of a terrifying serpent, the Afanc, in the depths of the water. It's easy to imagine serpents, dragons and giants in a landscape such as this, which is probably why Cadair Idris is so rich in myths and legends.

Llyn Cynwch

Highlight • Lake

Llyn Cynwch acts as both a 'prequel' and 'sequel' to the Precipice Walk, one of the most famous and popular walks in the area with breathtaking views. You'll get a glimpse of the lake if you take the route counterclockwise and you'll see it in all its glory if you finish the walk with a nice, steady stroll along the banks.
Together with the Precipice Walk it is part of the historic Nannau estate and is a working water basin that has supplied drinking water for Dolgellau since 1968. Because it is a water basin, swimming is not allowed.

Llyn Cau on the Minffordd Path

Highlight (Segment) • Lake

The Minffordd path should not be underestimated. It is a steep climb with alternating stairs, gravel paths, and rough rocky trails. The small lake Llyn Cau is a pleasant break along the way. Don't linger there too long.

Cregennan Lakes

Highlight • Lake

These twin lakes are particularly beautiful and lie just north of Cadair Idris. Both are owned by the National Trust and are free to visit. With mountains rising around them and views down to Barmouth and its estuary, don't leave your camera at home, because this is a fantastically photogenic spot.

From Cwm Cau, the impressive pointed summit of Craig Cwm Amarch looks even mightier than Cadair Idris' main Penygadair summit. It is certainly the most airy summit in the massif and care must be taken when treading close to its cliff edge, which plunges down to Llyn Cau.

The summit is an exceptional viewpoint, with Penygadair to the north, the cwm below and the gentle green of the Tarren Hills to the south.

The road to the Cregennan lakes is narrow and winding, you have to open and close a gate across the road yourself twice. At the end there is a reasonably large parking lot. Don't be put off by the access road and it is wonderful there!

Craig Cwm Amarch is separated from Cadair Idris by a short, narrow ridge around Craig Cau, which encloses the beautiful lake Llyn Cau.

First, a somewhat adventurous ride on the single track to the parking lot, which costs £5. The easy loop around the lake is very beautiful and relaxing – the sheep roam freely, but they keep their distance. Dogs must be on a leash, of course, but that's not a problem. Enjoy it – and if you're up for more, go for a longer loop. There are a few tables and benches above the parking lot for your picnic. You won't find any litter baskets, so you'll have to take them with you – which is perfectly fine, as it's a nature reserve. Highly recommended.
