There has been a church on this site for over 400 years with the present church being built in 1878-79.

The bridge from which the village derives its name crosses the Leck Beck a tributary of the River Lune. No longer used as a road bridge (a new bridge as been built alongside) but you can still cross the bridge on foot.

On the way down, south, from Coum Hill is another trig point, this one belonging to Crag Hill. It is just behind the wall that should be on your right. All the way to here, the path has been pretty good, a bit boggy in places, but okay.

Came up straight from the track, pretty good going over the tussocks. Nice trig pointed top but this is not the true summit. The true top is a nearby small pile of stones going east.

Bradamaya is an enclosure on the eastern side of Gragareth, with Braida Garth farm visible in Kingsdale (in the valley) to the east from here. Rising beyond it to the east, proudly, is Ingleborough. That's to the east. To the south-west, looking down along the dry wall here, which the path (faint at times, so stick to the wall) follows, you've got literally dozens of miles of unobstructed visibility towards the Forest of Bowland. The wall, by the way, is the boundary here between Lancashire and North Yorkshire.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the terrain like for hiking around Leck?

The hiking around Leck is characterized by the open fells and moorland of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. You can expect rolling hills, classic limestone landscapes, and river valleys like Leck Beck. Trails vary from grassy paths in the valleys to more rugged, rocky sections on the higher peaks such as Gragareth.

Are there any easy, family-friendly walks in the area?

Yes, while many routes involve significant climbs, there are options for families. The region offers gentler paths along river valleys. For a confirmed easier route, look for trails with less elevation gain that stick to the lower ground, providing a pleasant day out without the strenuous ascents of the main fells.

Can I bring my dog on the trails?

Dogs are often welcome on public footpaths around Leck, but it's essential to be mindful that you're in a national park with active farmland. Trails cross areas with sheep and ground-nesting birds, so always keep your dog on a lead and under close control to protect livestock and wildlife.

Are there any challenging hikes for experienced walkers?

Absolutely. The Leck area is excellent for a challenge. The fells offer steep ascents and long-distance routes across exposed terrain. For a difficult but rewarding day, consider the Gragareth and Ease Gill Kirk loop, which involves a significant climb and navigation through the impressive Ease Gill Kirk gorge system.

What do other hikers think of the trails around Leck?

The trails are highly regarded by the komoot community, with an average rating of 4.5 stars. Hikers frequently praise the expansive views from the fells, the unique limestone scenery, and the sense of solitude on the open moorland.

Are there any waterfalls or caves to see on the hikes?

Yes, the area is known for its impressive water-carved features. The Ease Gill Kirk gorge is a major highlight, featuring waterfalls and the entrance to one of the UK's most extensive cave systems. The Waterfall and Dry Falls – Leck Fell Lane loop from Cowan Bridge is a moderate route that specifically explores some of these dramatic geological formations.

What is the best time of year to hike around Leck?

Summer and autumn generally offer the best conditions, with drier ground and clearer skies for enjoying the panoramic views. However, the fells can be beautiful year-round. Spring brings wildflowers, while winter can offer crisp, quiet days. Always be prepared for changeable weather, especially on higher ground, regardless of the season.

How many hiking trails are available around Leck?

There are over 10 curated hiking routes available to explore around Leck on komoot. These range from moderate valley walks to difficult ascents onto the high fells, offering options for various fitness and experience levels.

Where can I park to start a hike?

Parking is limited and mostly consists of informal lay-bys and small verge-side spots, particularly along Leck Fell Lane. These can fill up quickly, especially on weekends. It's best to arrive early to secure a space and always park considerately, ensuring you do not block gates or narrow roads.

Is it possible to do a circular walk?

Yes, most of the popular routes in the area are designed as loops, allowing you to start and finish in the same place without retracing your steps. For a moderate circular option with great views, consider the Leck Fell Lane and Gragareth loop from Leck.

What should I wear or bring for a hike on Leck Fell?

Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots are essential due to the often boggy and rocky terrain. You should also carry waterproof jackets and trousers, as the weather on the fells can change rapidly. A map, compass, and plenty of water and snacks are also vital, as the routes are remote with no facilities.
