Komoot recommends this hike; so do I. There are quite a few twists and turns on this route, but it passes by quite a few interesting places, such as the Lever Bridge, the Japanese garden, the Pigeon Tower and the Rivington Pike, apart from the lovely scenery and remnants of Lever’s old bungalow.

Yes, there's a wide selection of routes. You can explore nearly 700 different hiking trails in the region, ranging from easy strolls to challenging moorland treks.
The area is highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 4.6 stars. Hikers often praise the variety of scenery, from the serene reservoir paths to the panoramic views from the West Pennine Moors.
Yarrow Valley Country Park is a popular choice for families. It's a large parkland with a lake, a waterfall, and an adventure playground. It also has a visitor centre and a café, making it a great spot for an easy day out.
Many trails in the area are suitable for walking with a dog. Duxbury Woods is a particularly good option, offering tranquil riverside paths that dogs enjoy. However, always be mindful of livestock when walking on open moorland and keep your dog on a lead where required.
While there are various places to park, spots can fill up quickly, especially in good weather. Some walkers park on Knowsley Lane to access reservoir routes, but it gets very busy. Arriving early is recommended to secure a space. Yarrow Valley Country Park also has a car park for visitors.
Yes, the region is great for circular walks. Besides the popular reservoir loops, you can find many gentle routes. For example, the trails within Yarrow Valley Country Park offer a relaxed circular walk with plenty to see, including a weir and woodlands.
The terrain is quite varied. You'll find flat, well-maintained paths around the reservoirs, which are great for an easy-going walk. Other routes, like those in Plock Wood or heading up towards the moors, can be hilly and more strenuous, often involving steps and boardwalks through woodland.
For those seeking a challenge, the White Coppice Stone Bridge – Great Hill Summit Shelter loop from Rivington is an excellent choice. It's a long-distance trek of nearly 20 km that takes you across the moors and offers a real sense of wildness.
For some of the most expansive views, a hike up to Rivington Pike is essential. From the tower at the summit, you get panoramic vistas across the Lancashire plain. On a clear day, you can see as far as the Lake District and the coast.
Yes, the area has several. Yarrow Valley Country Park features a well-known waterfall and weir. You can also enjoy the sight of running water at Duxbury Weir, which is a highlight of several local walks. The reservoir overflows near Knowsley Lane are also worth seeing, especially after heavy rain.
Accessing the trailheads directly via public transport can be challenging as many start in rural locations. The nearest major town with better bus and train links is Chorley. From there, you may need to use a local bus service or taxi to get closer to the start of your chosen route.
Yes, the West Pennine Moors offer great opportunities for longer treks. For a significant challenge, you could look into the Anglezarke Loop, a 30-mile multi-user trail that traverses the uplands. You can find a map and more details on the Visit Lancashire website.
