Wonderful experience, you can't beat a bit of rope dangling!

This is great fun! A great shark's fin of rock, rising at right angles to to main ridge right at the very top of Sgurr Dearg. The rock is sound and grippy, but you do need a head for heights as in places the ridge you are climbing is only about a foot wide. As you can imagine, the views from the top are sensational! The way down is to abseil straight down the shorter vertical side, with your rope attached to the massive boulder at the top of the pinnacle. You won't forget this experience!

Roped up for the last section - as a hiker more than climber, very glad we had a guide.

Very technical climb, but the views are like nowhere else. So worth getting a guide and heading up there

The mountain peaks in Broadford and Strath are predominantly part of the Cuillin range on the Isle of Skye. They are unique due to their distinct geology: the granite Red Cuillin, which have smoother, more rounded profiles, and the gabbro Black Cuillin, known for their jagged, dark, and formidable appearance. This geological diversity offers a wide range of challenges and stunning landscapes for hikers and climbers.
Many peaks offer exceptional views. Blà Bheinn Summit is renowned for its panoramic vistas of the Black Cuillin ridge and surrounding islands. Bruach na Frithe Summit is also celebrated as one of the finest viewpoints in the entire Cuillin range, offering extensive views along the ridge in both directions.
While many Cuillin peaks are challenging, some are more accessible for experienced hillwalkers. Bruach na Frithe Summit is considered one of the easier Munros in the Cuillin, requiring no technical scrambling for its most straightforward routes, though it still involves rocky terrain and scree. For easier walks, consider exploring the easy hikes around Broadford And Strath, which include routes like the Prince Charles' Cave loop.
The most technically challenging peak is The Inaccessible Pinnacle (In Pinn) on Sgùrr Dearg. It is the only Munro that requires rock climbing to reach its highest point, graded as a 'Moderate' climb with significant exposure. Reaching its summit is a major achievement for mountaineers.
The terrain varies significantly between the Red and Black Cuillin. The Red Cuillin, like Beinn na Caillich, typically feature steep, bouldery slopes with scree. The Black Cuillin, including peaks like Blà Bheinn and Sgùrr Alasdair, are composed of dark gabbro, offering excellent grip but involving rough ground, loose stones, scree gullies, and often requiring scrambling or even technical climbing.
Beinn na Caillich, dominating the skyline behind Broadford village, offers a less crowded, wild atmosphere compared to some of the more famous Black Cuillin peaks. Its challenging ascent is rewarded with exceptional 360-degree panoramic views.
Beyond mountain climbing and hiking, the area offers various outdoor activities. You can explore MTB trails, such as the challenging Loch Sligachan loop. There are also numerous running trails, including the scenic Boreraig, Suisnish & the Cleared Coast route.
The best time for climbing in the Scottish Highlands, including Broadford and Strath, is generally from late spring to early autumn (May to September) when weather conditions are more stable, and daylight hours are longer. However, weather can change rapidly at any time of year, so always be prepared for all conditions.
Visitors frequently praise the incredible views, the sense of achievement from challenging ascents, and the unique geology. The 'grippy gabbro rock' of the Black Cuillin is often highlighted by climbers, and the panoramic vistas from summits like Blà Bheinn are consistently mentioned as highlights.
The Inaccessible Pinnacle, or 'In Pinn,' is the dramatic fin of gabbro rock that forms the true summit of Sgùrr Dearg. It is unique as the only Munro (Scottish mountain over 3,000 feet) that requires rock climbing to reach its highest point. It's a significant objective for mountaineers, offering sensational exposure and a 'Moderate' graded climb.
The Red Cuillin, exemplified by Beinn na Caillich, are primarily granite, giving them a reddish hue and generally smoother, more rounded profiles. They are often considered less technically challenging for hillwalkers. The Black Cuillin, which include peaks like Blà Bheinn and Sgùrr Alasdair, are made of dark gabbro and basalt, resulting in jagged, dark, and formidable appearances with steep cliffs and scree slopes, making them popular with experienced rock climbers and scramblers.
