MacDuff's Castle

Highlight • Castle

MacDuff's Castle was originally built in the 11th century. However, nothing survives from this period and the ruins you see today are from the 14th and 15th centuries. You can explore the castle for free, at your leisure, as there is no tourist infrastructure. Be warned, though, the castle is said to be haunted by the grey lady, who has also been sighted around the caves below. Locals say it is the ghost of Mary Sibbald, who was found guilty of theft and died in the castle.

Elie Chainwalk

Highlight • Climb

Elie Chainwalk is an exhilarating 1,640 foot (500 m) long scramble along a series of chains attached to the cliffs. It takes around two hours to complete and you will need a good level of agility, confidence, fitness, technical ability and a definite spirit of adventure. However, solidly-planted steel chains, perfectly-placed footholds, and easy-to-grip volcanic rock make it a manageable challenge for most adventurers. PLEASE NOTE the chains are submerged at high tide so make sure you set of at least TWO HOURS BEFORE high tide. For more information on tide times, visit: bbc.co.uk/weather/coast_and_sea/tide_tables/7.

Wemyss Caves

Highlight • Cave

The Wemyss Caves were forged by the power of the ocean around 8,000 years ago. You can see six caves on the coastline below the ruins of MacDuff’s Castle; many of which have immense historical importance due to the high number of carvings which are inscribed on their walls—the earliest of which are thought to date to the Bronze Age. Under threat from coastal erosion, structural instability, and vandalism, the caves have been designated as a scheduled monument.

In the ARD series "Classics of World Literature", Tilman Spengler pays tribute to famous writers in one of his film contributions - each lasting a quarter of an hour - and introduces the culturally interested viewer to their literary work. One episode of the series deals with DANIEL DEFOE (1660 to 1731) and the character he invented, ROBINSON CRUSOE, whose name will be far more familiar to many people than that of his literary creator. This monument is dedicated to Alexander Selkirk, the person whose real life fate inspired Defoe to create Crusoe.
