Herzogin Luise liked to retreat here. Contemporaries called her "heavyweight"; her life at the side of her fun-loving husband was apparently not great happiness. She died in 1808 and – against all convention and at her express wish – was initially buried under one of her beloved old trees east of the Schweizerhaus. Later she was moved to the Louisen-Mausoleum.

The water features were created during the late Baroque expansion under court architect Johann Joachim Busch (around the 1760s) during the time of Duke Friedrich. The park emerged from a small Baroque garden (from 1731/35) and was redesigned as a landscape park by Peter Joseph Lenné from 1852–1860. The fountains are operated exclusively by the natural (and partly artificially created) gradient of the water – without mechanical pumps. This applies to all water features in the park.

The municipality of Karstädt in the Prignitz district (Brandenburg) is rich in historical sacred buildings. When people talk about the "Dorfkirche Karstädt" (Karstädt village church), they usually mean the Neo-Gothic brick church in the main town, but there are other architectural treasures in the associated districts. Today's church in the town center is an impressive example of North German Brick Gothic from the late 19th century.
