The 45-hectare protected forest preserves and develops a groundwater-influenced mixed deciduous forest as a near-natural research area, stabilizing in particular the water balance fed by the Old Rhin River and protecting endangered plant and animal species. As a particularly valuable remnant of a eutrophic mixed deciduous forest in the northern Havelland region, it has been scientifically studied since the partial cessation of logging in 1961 and is also used as a demonstration area for silviculture and forestry education, thereby also safeguarding forest genetic resources. At the same time, the area is part of the Natura 2000 site "Friesack Zootzen" and the "Rhin-Havelluch" bird sanctuary, providing a protected habitat for forest and floodplain habitats of European importance, as well as for rare bird species such as red and black kites, honey buzzards, woodpeckers, and red-breasted flycatchers.
