Between Almagro and Valdepeñas is the La Mancha town of Moral de Calatrava, on the border of the Campo de Calatrava region. This town presents us with beautiful natural landscapes and an urban layout that has been declared a Historic-Artistic Site for being a clear example of popular architecture. Without forgetting the church of San Andrés, built between the 15th and 16th centuries, it is in a fabulous state of preservation.

Moral de Calatrava is a small town in the Campo de Calatrava region with a deep history that goes back to prehistoric times. It is located on an old Roman road between Mérida and Levante. Today I recommend you stop for tapas in the Plaza de España and admire the magnificent San Andrés Apóstol Parish.

The Church in honor of the patron saint of Moral is located in the Plaza de España; It was built in 1475 from the existence of a watchtower from the Muslim period. It is a monumental sanctuary with different styles present, especially the Gothic inside and the Renaissance in the main door, called "Puerta de San Andrés". In addition to its religious value, tourists will be able to enjoy its pictorial value thanks to some of the paintings inside, such as the Cristobalón, a huge fresco dated at the end of the 15th century, or La Trinidad, attributed to Luis Tristán, who was disciple of El Greco.

It emerges as a place of social recreation that throughout history has undergone several transformations until reaching its current state. The surroundings of the Plaza de España is the most important monumental area of Moral. Its four sides are delimited by unique buildings, such as the Parish Church of San Andrés Apóstol, the Town Hall, the old Pósito and some stately homes.

The Church of San Andrés has a first phase of Roman origin. In ancient times it was possibly the house of the curia or granary to collect tributes. It has a single nave and due to the Gothic frescoes found, the temple itself must be from the 15th century. The portico is Renaissance from the 16th century and is very similar to that of the Church of San Blas de Almagro. Several paintings are preserved in the atrium: in the upper central part there is an interesting painting by Luis Tristan -a disciple of "el Greco"-, "La Trinidad", with a pyramidal composition. In the lower right, an 18th-century Saint Sebastian; in the center, the crucifixion of Saint Andrew (anonymous 18th century), a good copy of the "Martyrdom of Saint Andrew" by Rubens and Saint Blaise on the left, by an unknown author from the 18th century.

The hermitage is located on the Paseo de San Roque, at the foot of the San Cristóbal hill. It was built at the end of the 18th century to replace another primitive located in another place. It is very similar to the hermitage of the Virgen de la Sierra.
