Everything went smoothly. We booked the tickets online from Bad Gastein to Mallnitz. We unnecessarily cycled to Böckstein and boarded there. But that wasn't a problem. Tickets are accepted digitally. We had to leave the bikes in the front carriage and then board the last carriage. The cars are transported in between.

If you've struggled up to the car lock and are thinking of bridging the wait with a snack, there's nothing up there for miles around... You should either bring something with you or take a break for lunch in the village beforehand.

Our e-bikes had to be loaded into the carriage at the other end of the train; we weren't allowed to load them into the passenger carriages. However, there was plenty of time, and the staff members were able to load and secure the bikes properly.

We were there again this year. I asked several people what had happened to the path and got different answers. There must have been three events. First, there was a destructive flood in the upper section of the path due to excessive water being released from the reservoir during heavy rain. After that, repair work on the path began, until a rockslide with lots of rubble and mud completely tore away a section of the path. Then there were reports of a large avalanche in which people were injured and part of the path was damaged again. People should not have been there, because the path has always been closed in winter and in spring as long as there was a risk of avalanches. However, according to a local, this event occurred after the first damage had already occurred and the year-round closure had already been in place. With touring skis, you don't need a path. You can get along well on the steep, snow-covered slope. If you then ignore the risk of avalanches... Unfortunately, these cases are becoming more common in the mountains. You simply set off where you found directions in Komoot or Outdooractive, loaded the GPX file into the app and planned the tour for a specific day. No matter what the weather is like, no matter what warnings are given, you simply set off because it was planned for that day. Don't forget: In the event of negligence and disregard of road closures, the rescue and recovery costs will be charged to those affected. This can quickly add up to 20 - 30 thousand euros.
