This section of the cycle path that has been marked here is not really a highlight, because the path that runs the entire way along a busy road (the L256) has been marked here. Approximately 100m away, parallel to it, there is a much nicer alternative route, directly along the Elbe dyke (the path runs from the end of the village of Laase to just before Gorleben, directly along the Elbe dyke). The path along the Elbe dyke is wider, much easier to ride and much more scenic than the narrow and, in bad weather, often slippery cycle path along the L256. There is also a narrow, paved path directly on the dyke, although it is very bumpy, not a problem with a mountain bike, but with a racing bike I would recommend the path next to the dyke.

along the L 256. Great cycle path that is not directly on the road. That's just how it works :)

The information about JR56’s planned “Gorleben nuclear waste storage facility” is not up to date. Therefore an addition at this point: "They can't get away with Gorleben - we'll stand in the way, x-thousand times in the way!" they always said and wrote. And they were right. After 43 years (!) of resistance, “cross-generational, colorful, undaunted, cheeky” and with a lot of “stamina”, it has been clear since September 28, 2020 that the salt dome in Wendland is unsuitable as a final storage site for highly radioactive nuclear waste. This is not a political decision, but a geoscientific decision. And as with the topic of pandemics, which virologists have so much to tell us these days, in this case the geologists investigated and spoke plainly. And the resistance celebrates! Rightly so. This route is an alternative to the cycle path on the L256. Here you have a beautiful view of and over the Elbe to MVP. White-tailed eagles, kites and other birds of prey are regularly on the move here.

Not only the rest area but the whole way is a nice alternative for the bike path on the L256. This runs in serpentine lines through pine forest and when there is oncoming traffic it is sometimes very narrow. So I choose this alternative route and yes, you have a beautiful view of and over the Elbe.

The small town of Gorleben is located directly on the left bank of the Elbe. There are beautiful paths here where you can cycle along the Elbe in a relaxed manner. The municipality of Gorleben gained nationwide and international fame through its plans to set up a national nuclear waste repository and through the transport of nuclear waste to the existing above-ground interim storage facility in the forest south of the town, which was fortunately discontinued in the meantime. https://www.elberadweg.de/Ort/gorleben/
