The Trebeltal was the state border between Pomerania and Mecklenburg, which was once difficult to cross and had only a few crossings. Medieval castles with guard and protective functions stood on both sides of the river. One of them was the castle near Nehringen. Near the village there is a historic bascule bridge over the Trebel, which was once planned by the Royal Building Council Westphal from Stralsund, financed jointly by the Mecklenburg and Pomeranian side and opened to traffic in mid-June 1911. The bridge was reconstructed between 1983 and 1990. It has a load capacity of three tons and allows a maximum vehicle width of two meters. The history of the bridge probably goes back to the early 16th century. A bridge over the Trebel built by Degener Bugenhagen near his estate at Nehring is documented for the first time in 1504. However, this was apparently destroyed again after a short time due to disputes between Dukes Bugislaw and Heinrich and one can assume that there was no longer a Trebel crossing here from the end of the 16th century until the construction of the bascule bridge.

The bascule bridge in Nehringen is always worth a visit. It can also be driven on by car, but it is nicer to walk across. So you can enjoy the great view of the Trebel, discover fish and water lilies 😊
