St. Bartholomew’s Church, Wesselburen

Highlight • Religious Site

Wesselburen was built on two ridges in the marshland that had been inhabited for over 1000 years and over time grew into a larger settlement. According to archaeological finds, the central village wall dates back to the 8th to 9th centuries and was continually increased. The place was first mentioned in a document on May 7, 1281, when the people of Hamburg and Dithmarscher signed a non-aggression pact in Mehldorf. Even then, the town had the structure it has today: starting from the highest point on which the church is located, the main streets radiate out from the historic town center.

After Wesselburen had lost the independence of the Dithmarschen Farmers' Republic in 1559, the town flourished.

Heide Market Square

He is the former venue of the state assembly of the free and independent farmer republic Dithmarschen (1447-1559). 48 rulers met every Saturday, drew up laws, spoke justice, imposed punishments, received or sent embassies. St. Nicholas' Church, Wöhrden

Highlight • Religious Site

The first church at this location went up in flames during the “Battle of Wöhrden”. Thereupon the inhabitants built the "Victory Church", the first Gothic hall church in Dithmarschen, which stands in the middle of the highest Wurt Dithmarschen (6.24 meters above sea level). It is named after Nicolaus, the patron saint of fishermen and merchants. Having become dilapidated, it was demolished and rebuilt in the late Baroque style from 1786 to 1788.
Today it has a five-sided closure and a 42 meter high tower, which hides a four-part bell and a fire bell in the east wall.

The current St. Nicolaikirche is a baroque church, the light-flooded interior of which is of a simple beauty. The monumental pulpit altar, boxes, galleries and the floating baptismal angel form an almost closed baroque work of art.

Baptisms came into fashion in Protestant churches in the late 17th century. Of the 62 baptismal angels originally located in Schleswig-Holstein, 23 are still in use today. The Wöhrden baptismal angel floats, held by an iron rod, in the chancel and can be pulled down for the baptism.
The 20-burner brass chandelier from 1643, like an alabaster relief from 1613, is one of the few treasures that have been preserved after the introduction of the Reformation and the associated changes in the church furnishings.
The alabaster epitaph represents the Last Judgment, with the resurrection of the pious and the wicked.

The greatest specialty in the Wöhrden church is undoubtedly the Anthonius Wilde organ from 1593, which was taken over from the previous church. Carefully developed, properly stored and reinstalled, repeatedly restored, overhauled and carefully guarded, it is still in excellent condition today. Visitors can convince themselves of their unique sound at church services and concerts.

March 2, 2025, Heide Market Square

With almost 47,000 square meters of undeveloped space, it is the largest market place in Germany. As early as the 16th century, traders came together there every Saturday for a weekly market.

Today we see a building that was made possible in the spirit of the community of Jesus Christ. The habitus is a uniform large hall building, on the floor plan of an almost square ship. The choir and apse nestle against the preserved rock walls. Romanesque masonry and Gothic architectural style merged. The crack of the church comes from the builder Johann Georg Schott from Heide, who was born and grew up in southern Germany (Vaihingen an der Enz). With his influence, he may be responsible for the shape of the roof turret, the “onion”, which is impressive in northern Germany. You can see it from far away and some people say: “When I see the “onion”, I know I’m home now!” https://www.kirche-wesselburen.de/geschichte

first mentioned in 1281 One of the most beautiful baroque churches in Schleswig-Holstein Wöhrden was first mentioned as an independent parish in 1281. As Count Gerhard III. In the war with Dithmarschen in 1319 Wöhrden was besieged, the Dithmarschers trapped in the church dared to launch a sortie and defeated the noble army. The church, which stands on the highest hill in Dithmarschen, was built in the late Baroque style between 1786 and 1788 by the Saxon-born master builder Johann August Rothe after the previous building was demolished. The tower was renovated in 1956/57. Of the four bells, one weighing 300 kilograms dates from 1493, the other weighing 1,200 kilograms was cast by Hermann Klinghe in 1453. The hall building with a five-sided choir end and high, light windows is structured on the outside by pilasters. Triangular gables with the monogram of the Danish King Christian VII are emblazoned above the entrances in the south and north. https://www.echt-dithmarschen.de/typ-dithmarschen/gehenswuerdigkeiten/details/st-nicolai-kirche/

Beautiful and quite bright church in the Baroque architectural style. Further information can be researched here: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/St.-Nicolai-Kirche_(W%C3%B6hrden) Remarkable because the pulpit altar and the baptismal angel are not found that often.
