No, Coon Hollow State Forest is an intentionally undeveloped area without any officially marked or maintained hiking trails. This offers a true wilderness experience for hikers who are skilled in navigation and comfortable with off-trail exploration using a map, compass, or GPS.
You can expect a diverse and rugged landscape. The forest features a mix of mountainous hills, dense woodlands, open grasslands, and vital wetlands. Be prepared for varied and potentially challenging underfoot conditions due to the lack of formal paths.
Yes, dogs are generally permitted in New York State Forests, but they must be kept under your control at all times. Given the presence of wildlife and the rugged, unfenced terrain, it's crucial to ensure your dog does not disturb the natural environment or other visitors.
There are no designated parking lots. Visitors typically park on the shoulder of the public roads that pass through or border the forest. Ensure your vehicle is parked safely and does not obstruct traffic.
Yes, primitive camping is permitted, which is ideal for those looking to immerse themselves in a wilderness setting. This is a form of dispersed camping, so there are no designated campsites or facilities. Campers must follow Leave No Trace principles.
The forest is a vibrant habitat for a wide array of wildlife. With patience, you might spot white-tailed deer, black bears, fishers, beavers, and mink. It's also an excellent location for birdwatching, with species like the black-throated blue warbler and the state-endangered Henslow's sparrow present.
Due to the lack of marked trails and rugged terrain, Coon Hollow State Forest is not ideal for casual family walks. For easier, well-defined paths suitable for families, consider the Glen Creek via Finger Lakes Trail in nearby Watkins Glen State Park.
Because there are no marked trails, navigation tools are essential. You must bring a good map of the area along with a compass or a reliable GPS device. Also pack plenty of water, food, a first-aid kit, and appropriate layers of clothing for changing weather conditions.
General New York State Forest regulations apply. Activities like hunting and trapping are permitted in season, so it's wise to wear bright colors during these times. For a detailed list of activities and specific rules, you can consult the official page for Coon Hollow State Forest.
Coon Hollow is a wild, undeveloped area best for off-trail navigation. In contrast, the nearby Sugar Hill State Forest offers a more structured experience with a system of marked trails, including a fire tower that provides panoramic views. For a well-defined loop, you could try the Sugar Hill Fire Tower loop from Tyrone.
