April 27, 2025, View of Kriebstein Castle

The castle sits enthroned on a steep rocky outcrop on the Zschopau River and is considered the most beautiful knight's castle in Saxony.

In 1539 there was a farm as an individual estate in Gersdorf, which belonged to the Altzella monastery as a farm. From 1925 the Gersdorf manor was owned by the zur Lippe family and was leased to Daniel von Hoenning O'Carroll in 1937. He was killed by Polish forced laborers in 1945 and thrown into a mountain shaft. After the Zur Lippe family was expropriated in 1945, an FDGB district school was set up in Gersdorf Castle. It was later used as a dormitory for apprentices and then served as a general boarding school. In 1997, Gersdorf Castle was acquired by a GbR who wanted to set up a center for multiple addicts there. These plans failed. A shared apartment has moved into the castle on a leasehold basis, the aim of which is to gradually renovate the castle. At the end of 2012, the community acquired the castle, along with some outbuildings and the property, converting the lease into ownership. The farm buildings are dilapidated. The von Poigk family undertook some modifications in the mid-18th century, giving the castle the appearance it has today. After that it changed hands a few more times. The last lords of the castle were the von Schröter family. It was later expropriated and a school set up in it, which lasted until 1996. Now the building is empty. The ruin towers almost majestically over the hollow. Unfortunately, you can no longer walk through it, a barred door has blocked access for several years.
