Located on the ancient Via Flavia, which connected Trieste to Pola, the village of San Lorenzo holds great historical-archaeological interest. In the 11th century, the site was surrounded by defensive walls and the three-nave parish church of San Martino, with an adjoining loggia, was erected, representing one of the finest Istrian examples of Romanesque architecture. In the 14th century, the walls were enlarged, the foundations were reinforced, and square towers were built. It was precisely the double ring of walls that allowed the population of San Lorenzo to defend themselves against the Uskok attacks in the 17th century; however, shortly thereafter, the plague of 1630, which struck all of Istria, also severely affected the settlement of San Lorenzo. The construction of a civic cemetery, recently discovered by archaeologists, also dates back to the late Middle Ages. (From Wikipedia).
