Ballybunion is still an insider tip and definitely worth seeing. You can take a short cliff hike and pass a rocky gate in the sea, a ruin and the beach. You can take a swimming break on the beach and look directly at the ruins.

You can even get down to the beach via a small path and rope climbing. But it looks very adventurous and you have to pay attention to the tides.

Perched on the Shannon River, Carrig Island is connected to the rest of Kerry by a narrow causeway. Although the population of Carrig Island is now tiny, it is still extensively farmed. It is possible to run all the way along the western shore of Carrig Island to Curran Point Battery, which dates back to Napoleonic times.

Travelling all the way from the mountains of North Cork, the River Feale passes by Listowel on its way to the sea near Ballybunion. It is famous for salmon fishing. Legend has it that the river is named after a princess named Fial. While bathing in the river she spotted someone watching her so made her way further into the water to protect her modesty. She had no idea this person was her husband and had tragically gone so deep into the river that she drowned.

Standing proudly over the River Fearle is Listowel Castle. It was built in the 15th century and still looks formidable, even though only two of its four towers remain today. The Seanchaí Literary Centre next door houses more information about the castle, as well as a cafe. Pronounced 'shan-a-key', Seanchaí is the art of storytelling and the centre is a museum of words. One entry fee covers both the Seanchaí Literary Centre and a guided tour of the castle.
