Owner and history: The Potocki family (Zator line). This estate belonged to them from the 1830s until 1945. Function: It was a manor house of the administration (administrative center). It was not the main family residence (that was the castle in Zator), but the management center for the largest pond complex in the region. What was there before the war? Fishery Management Offices: This is where all the fishery management was directed from. Decisions about stocking, catches, and the sale of Zator carp to the markets of Krakow, Vienna, and Prague were made here. Manager's Apartment: A qualified manager (ichthyologist/economist) lived in the building, who was directly responsible to the Potockis for fish profits. Communication Hub: Przyręb was key due to its location on the Vistula River and the system of canals (the so-called Wieprzówka Canal), which supplied water to the ponds.Economic Back-up: Next to the manor house were warehouses for feed (grain), fishing gear, and stables. Architecture: The building is brick, single-story, with a high basement and a characteristic porch. It was designed to be solid and functional – it had to withstand the moisture coming directly from the surrounding ponds. In summary: Before the war, this was the operational hub of the Przeręb Fishery, belonging to the Zator estates of Maurycy Potocki.

St. Bartholomew's Church in Poręba Wielka is a wooden, late Gothic church, whose present form dates from the early 16th century (1502–1506). The church was founded by Count Zygmunt Porębski. Its history includes a period when it served as a Calvinist church from 1720 to 1763. Later, after renovations, the church was rebuilt, and the furnishings (including the altars) were changed to Baroque styles. Renovation and conservation work was carried out in the 21st century.

The road between the Przyręb ponds is a must-see in this area. I've driven it several times. The asphalt there is long past its prime, but the views, whether in spring, summer, or autumn, are breathtaking. I highly recommend it.

Unfortunately, it was impossible to even enter the square in front of the castle. It was closed. Photos taken from behind the fence.

Reconstructions and Changes of Ownership The Swedish Deluge: In the 17th century, the building was destroyed during the war with Sweden. Neo-Gothic style (19th century): In 1836, Count Aleksander Poniatowski commissioned a neo-Gothic reconstruction of the castle, which was carried out by the architect Franciszek Maria Lanci. Further Changes of Ownership: After the Poniatowski family, the castle continued to change owners. During this time, it belonged to the Institute of Animal Production and later to the Institute of Inland Fisheries. Contemporary Fate and Renovation Post-War Damage: After World War II, the castle was destroyed, its furnishings were stolen, and the building was repeatedly converted for various purposes. Contemporary Renovations: Between 1964 and 1973, the castle was partially renovated, and revitalization work is currently underway to restore its gastronomic and museum functions. Private Owners: Currently (following a court decision in 2013), the castle is in the hands of its rightful owners – the heirs of the Potocki family. Closed to Visitors: The castle is currently undergoing renovation.
