Avenue of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Highlight • Structure

Aleja Najświętszej Maryi Panny (often abbreviated as Al. NMP or Aleje) - a street in Częstochowa, which is the main, representative communication artery of the city center. The avenue was established at the beginning of the 19th century as a road connecting Częstochowa and Nowa Częstochowa, cities administratively connected on August 19, 1826. Currently, it connects the Old Town of Częstochowa, Śródmieście and the Podjasnogórska district.
The avenue is characterized by a structure in which two two-lane roadways are separated by a boulevard running between them. During the pilgrimage period, it is used by pilgrims heading for the Jasna Góra monastery. Among the inhabitants of Częstochowa, there is a traditional division into three independent parts (Avenue I, Avenue II and Avenue III).

Władysław Biegański Square

Highlight • Monument

One of the squares in the center of Częstochowa, lying on the pilgrimage road to Jasna Góra, dividing the Avenue of the Holy Virgin Mary into the so-called "Second avenue" - east of the square, and "third avenue" - west of it.
In the years 1828–1836, in the southern part of the square, according to a design by Franciszek Reinstein, a town hall was erected along with a guardhouse and a detention facility which no longer exists. It was built halfway between Old and New Częstochowa.
In 1908 it was rebuilt. Late-Classicist, multi-storey with a round two-storey tower.
It was the seat of the city authorities until the 1960s, now - along with the guardianship - it belongs to the Częstochowa Museum.
In 1875 a tenement house was built here, now called Popówka.
In the years 1892–1926 there was a power plant at the back of the town hall.

Old Market Square in Częstochowa

Highlight • Monument

In the Middle Ages, the Old Market Square served as the market square of Old Częstochowa.

The buildings in the market square were burned down during the Swedish invasion.

Townhouses on the eastern and northern sides of the square remain preserved. From the 15th century to 1812, the town hall stood here, but was destroyed by fire. According to legend, Napoleon Bonaparte spent the night in the inn at the Old Market Square on his way to Moscow with his troops.

In 2007, archaeological excavations began in the market square. These led to the discovery of the city well, the foundations of several no longer existing buildings, likely the city scales, and a gallows.

Balancing Sculptures by Jerzy Kędziora
The entire project is complemented by original balancing sculptures in the form of a "theater." This is undoubtedly one of the main attractions of the square's new arrangement. There are 14 sculptures, forming several thematic groups of figures.

The group of sculptures forms a collection dubbed "Teatrum – Igrce Częstocha" by the author. This is the largest exhibition of works by Częstochowa artist Jerzy Kędziora in an urban setting, and it can now finally be fully admired.

The fortified hill 296.6 towering over the north-west part of Częstochowa was one of the key defense points of the "North" section in the "Częstochowa" position, also known as the Częstochowa redoubt. In addition, the hill was also an excellent vantage point for Polish artillery observers, with a view stretching as far as Lgotha and Libidza. The possible conquest of the hill could therefore give the Germans a perfect insight into the center of the Polish grouping and, consequently, the possibility of breaking the first line of defense of the 27th Infantry Regiment.
