Ponta Delgada City Gates

Highlight • Monument

The landmark of Ponta Delgada was built in the 18th century near the former wharf and later, during the construction of the Avenida Infante Dom Henrique, was converted to the Gonçalo Velho Cabral Square. It consists of three arches, of which the coat of arms of the royal arms and the city are depicted on the middle. These city gates are the calling card of Ponta Delgada.

Buraco de São Pedro

Highlight • Natural Monument

The opposite stele can only be reached via an exposed area. Be careful: the path is slippery and you must be careful not to be afraid of heights. The view from the other side is phenomenal, but the path to get there is extremely dangerous. The “Buraco de São Pedro” is believed to be a lava tube or lava field collapse caused by volcanic activity. Such formations are formed when underground lava flows cool and retreat, causing the surface to collapse and form caves or holes.

April 6, 2026, Igreja do Colégio dos Jesuítas

The Igreja Todos os Santos (also known as Colégio dos Jesuítas) is a baroque building from the 17th century and today serves as an exhibition space for sacred art from the Carlos Machado Museum. The foundation stone for the church was laid on November 1, 1592, All Saints' Day. At the same time as the church, the Jesuits also built the adjoining monastery, which served as their college. At that time, between ten and sixteen religious men lived there, who worked as teachers in the city. The church itself impresses with its combination of beautiful tiles and the carved altar. Today it is part of the "Collection of Sacred Art of the Carlos Machado Museum" and can be visited. Admission is free on Sundays. Otherwise, €2 (or €5 if you want to visit all 3 locations)

The main attraction in Ponta Delgada. A beautiful square in front of the old city gates, definitely worth a visit.

September 15, 2025, Buraco de São Pedro

A wooden fence blocks the path to the fall protection approximately 2 meters from the edge. Crossing to the other side or looking down would only be possible by "bypassing" the fence. Still an impressive stretch of coast, but this highlight doesn't (or no longer?) live up to the pictures.

This church is also beautiful, although not as ornate as some of the other churches in the city.

October 23, 2024, Mercado da Graça

The central farmers' market has been undergoing renovation for some time now. The fruit market has moved to the underground car park and there is currently no fish market on site. It's a shame if you had similar expectations as for the market in Funchal.
