The artificial grotto was designed by the Swiss-Portuguese architect Ernesto Korrodi at the beginning of the 20th century and features stone walls, trickling water, stalactite-like dripstones, and a small waterfall. After the strenuous climb along the Escadórios do Bom Jesus, the first stop is Largo do Pelicano, where you can take a short rest in view of the mighty basilica. The square leads to a fountain crowned with the figure of a pelican tearing open its breast to feed its young with its own blood.
