This is the only bicycle-friendly Lahn crossing between the northern Lollar (where the cycle path simply ends at the end of the bridge) and the cycle path from Wismar to Gießen, on the edge of the busy "Wißmarer Weg" (3km downstream, at the level of the Launsbacher Lakes).

Maybe some of you are interested in her story:
The former railway bridge was originally part of the “Cannon Railway”. This was built before the founding of the German Empire, bypassing the city of Giessen (as it did not belong to Prussia) as a rail connection from Berlin to the west. The name said it all. It was actually about ensuring state-owned military logistics. Wetzlar was a junction of the cannon railway. The Lollar - Wetzlar section was officially opened on October 15, 1878.
The Kanonenbahn branched off to the west onto its own route in Lollar and met the Lahntalbahn in Wetzlar, on which it continued west.

From the "Hirsefeldsteg" you have a wonderful view of the "Green Weir", the beautiful old houses on the Lahn and the old town with the castle. I am still happy every time I am here that the weir was not spoiled by concrete a few years ago.

From here you have a wonderful view of the Lahn, the beautiful houses on the Lahn and Marburg Castle. There was a bitter fight over the "Green Weir" several years ago because the weir was to be renovated with a lot of concrete and provided with boat steps and the like. Some of the trees and bushes on the bank should also have given way. It's good that it didn't turn out that way and that the many signatures were of some use!!! The “small repair” was completely sufficient. The old "Hirsefeld - Steg" was also repaired a few years ago. In my opinion this worked well.
