Coelho🐾🐇🇵🇹
November 7, 2025, Capela de Santo Amaro

There is a lack of documentation regarding the date of construction and its true history. The Chapel of Santo Amaro was of modern construction and it is likely that, originally, it was smaller, perhaps of similar dimensions to the other chapels of Matosinhos, some still existing, others already demolished. Later, it was considerably enlarged, enriched with several altars and images belonging to the disappeared chapels. Thus, when the Chapel of Santa Luzia, which existed at the end of the current Rua Cardeal D. Américo, disappeared, an altar and an image of Santa Luzia came to Santo Amaro; when the Chapel of Santa Ana was destroyed to beautify the place where Avenida Afonso Henriques, formerly Avenida Vitória, now runs, another altar and the image of Santa Ana came.

Climbing the tower is possible and costs €1 per person – great views! You pass the bells and the clock mechanism – a fantastic insight!

In Arcos, the highlight is its charming Romanesque bridge: the Ponte de São Miguel de Arcos, or simply Ponte de Arcos. It's estimated that this medieval bridge's origins date back to the 12th century. After years of supporting road traffic, it was freed from that burden in 2018 and is now pedestrian-only. A peaceful crossing with centuries of history beneath your feet.

Only the remains of the walls remain. If you don't know, you won't understand its significance.

There are several surf schools here...so what are you waiting for? The sea is very shallow here, and it's the best place to learn to surf.
