The Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Guja is preceded by the Hermitage of S. Julião (St. Julian), which already existed in 953 and is mentioned in the inventory of the Monastery of Guimarães in 1059. In addition to religious purposes, the chapel served as part of the defense system at the mouth of the Ave River and collaborated with the Fortress of Saint John the Baptist before its construction was completed. The exact date of construction of the current building is unknown, but studies point to the 16th century.
