Highlight • Lake

The Liebmannsee is a great place to rest. There is a small kiosk with benches and tables. But it can also be endured very well on the meadows on the bank, which invite you to have a picnic.

The bridge connects Bad Radkersburg and Gornja Radgona. You can go down a few steps in the middle of the bridge and look better at the Mur. There is a lot of traffic on this bridge.

Important: Here at Liebmannsee is the only battery charging station for e-bikes for miles around. It's about 100 meters from the rest area. https://maps.app.goo.gl/n5dm6BzavBZJpkGh6

A super nice tour, lots of asphalt roads, but also gravel paths, partly along the Mur, great views, beautiful towns, good food, great lakes and ponds, a short ride on the Mur ferry (free), highly recommended

In the 1880s, a national conflict began to unfold, primarily concerning the language issue in schools, government offices, courts, and political representation. The language spoken by Radkersburg's citizens was generally German. Their servants, however, and the rural population of the surrounding communities downstream of the Mur River predominantly spoke Slovene. The national conflict escalated politically and militarily during the First World War. The town was a garrison town of the Austro-Hungarian Army; in 1914, the second squadron of the 16th Hussar Regiment was stationed here. After the end of the First World War, troops of the SHS (State of Slovenes, Croats, and Serbs) occupied Radkersburg and its surrounding communities on the left bank of the Mur River. The betrayed and failed uprising of the German-speaking population led by Johann Mickl took place on February 4, 1919. SHS troops only evacuated the area in July 1920 in exchange for the Abstall Basin, which was also predominantly German-speaking. The town was divided, and the Oberradkersburg district (Gornja Radgona) on the other, right bank of the Mur became part of Slovenia, or rather, the SHS state. The Peace Treaty of Saint-Germain definitively made Radkersburg a divided border town.

The conflicts with the Ottoman Empire in the 16th century necessitated the renovation and modernization of the fortress. Italian architects were brought to Austria due to their excellent knowledge of fortress construction. As in Graz, Domenico dell'Allio, a native of the province of Como, was commissioned to oversee construction. The main features of the Renaissance fortifications were bastions, curtain walls, and a deep moat. Radkersburg was elevated to an Imperial Fortress by the Diet of Augsburg in 1582.
