This stop on the Ecopista is important because it also marks the start of a beautiful walking trail 👣👣 PR18 - VildeMoinhos and its stories (VIS)🇵🇹. In fact, the trail begins a little earlier, in the large parking lot near the intersection between Dão Ecopista and Quinta Belém. It begins by crossing the public gardens before entering the Ecopista, a common pedestrian and cycling path. Follow this eco-trail for 1,400 meters until turning left at Santarinho. The region offers diverse terrain, from the rugged granite landscapes and forests of the nearby Serra do Caramulo mountain range to the gentler paths along the Vouga River basin. You'll find a mix of challenging singletracks, scenic dirt roads, and former railway lines converted into ecopistas, traversing vineyards, olive groves, and lush valleys.
Yes, there are options for less experienced riders and families. For example, the Mosteirinho – Old Vildemoinhos Stop loop from São Salvador is an easy 18.5-mile (29.8 km) path with gentle gradients, perfect for exploring the local countryside at a relaxed pace. The Vouga River ecopista also provides a relatively flat and scenic route.
Absolutely. Many routes in the region are designed as loops, allowing you to start and finish at the same point. The Vouzela Ecotrail loop from Vouzela is a longer, more challenging option, while the Barba Azeda Restaurant & Bar loop from São João de Lourosa offers a moderate ride through rural landscapes.
Yes, the region is rich in natural beauty. The Serra do Caramulo offers breathtaking panoramic views from elevated points like Caramulinho and Cabeço da Neve. You can also find pure water streams and small waterfalls. Along the Vouga River, you'll ride through an 'enchanted valley' with diverse landscapes. The Casa de Santa Eufémia loop from Vila Chá Sá-Gorgulhão 1 is a moderate route that showcases some of the region's scenic beauty.
The area has several points of interest. You might encounter traditional 'espigueiros' (granaries) in granite villages within the Serra do Caramulo. The Vouga River ecopista is built on a former railway line, offering a glimpse into historical railway heritage. Specific highlights include the Torredeita Railway Station and Steam Locomotive, and a Tunnel Along the Ecopista do Dão.
Many of the natural trails and ecopistas in the region are suitable for riding with dogs, provided they are well-behaved and kept under control, especially when encountering other trail users or wildlife. Always ensure your dog is fit enough for the distance and elevation, and carry enough water for both of you.
The spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) months generally offer the most pleasant conditions for mountain biking in Boa Aldeia. Temperatures are milder, and the landscapes are vibrant. Summers can be hot, especially in July and August, so early morning or late afternoon rides are recommended then. Winters are cooler and can be wet, but still offer opportunities for riding on clearer days.
Yes, some routes pass by or near establishments where you can refuel. For instance, the Barba Azeda Restaurant & Bar loop from São João de Lourosa is named after a local spot. Other options include the Station Alive Restaurant – Farminhão and the Parada de Gonta Former Railway Station and Barba Azeda Restaurant & Bar, which are accessible from some trails.
The broader Viseu district, including the area around Boa Aldeia, offers a wide range of challenges. You can find everything from easy, flat rides suitable for beginners on ecopistas to more demanding ascents and technical descents in areas like the Serra do Caramulo. The Vouzela Ecotrail loop from Vouzela, for example, is classified as difficult with significant elevation gain.
While Boa Aldeia itself is a small village, the Viseu municipality has some public transport options. However, transporting bikes on public transport in rural Portugal can be challenging. It's often more practical to travel by car to trailheads, especially for mountain biking. Some ecopistas, like the Vouga River path, are accessible from various towns, which might have better transport links.
Parking is generally available in the villages and towns that serve as starting points for many routes. For trails that utilize former railway lines, such as the Vouga River ecopista, you can often find designated parking areas at the old station sites or nearby. Always look for appropriate parking spots to avoid obstructing local traffic or private property.
