Mirna Gora Mountain Hut (STKP 60)

Highlight • Mountain Hut

Planinski dom stands just below the top of Mirna gora in the southeastern area of Kočevski Rog and next to the ruins of the church of Sv. Francis.

View:
From the home or from the remodeled church tower there is a very beautiful view. In the east, Bela krajina with Metlika and Črnomelj is below us, and on the other side of the Kolpa, Croatia is already towards Karlovac; on the south side we see in the vicinity the Poljansko gorovje, behind it the mountains in Gorski Kotar with Klek and the peaks of Velika Kapela; to the west extends Kočevski Rog; in the north we see a part of Gorjanci with Trdinov vrh and Žumberak, and in front of it Smuk and Semenič, which rise above Semič. If it is very clear, the view extends all the way to Zagreb and Medvednica above it and to Karlovac.

Mirna Gora Summit (1047 m)

Highlight • Summit

Mirna Gora is a peak in the southeastern area of Kočevski Rog, a plateau in the Dinaric mountain system, bordering Suha krajina in the northwest, Kočevsko polje in the west, Črmošnjica and Bela krajina in the east and Kolpa valley in the south. The highest peak of the mountain range is Veliki Rog (1099 m), and Mirna gora is the highest peak in Bela krajina. Kočevski Rog is built mostly of Cretaceous, and in the southern part of Jurassic limestone, with dolomite appearing in between. In some places there are thin marly layers between the dolomite, which retain water on the surface; therefore, here and there, even in the area of Mirna gora, there are wells, short streams and puddles. The whole of Kočevski Rog is karstic, here we meet many karst sinkholes, hollows and abysses. The whole mountain range is overgrown mostly with spruce and beech forests, in between there are shrubs, where they were until the 2nd world. war settlements of the Kočevar family with modest fields and orchards, and now they are mostly overgrown with bushes. In the wider area of Mirna gora, such settlements were Sredgora, Gače, Škrilj and Ponikve. Only the village of Planina at the foot of Mirna gora is again modestly inhabited, mainly thanks to foresters. In the village there is a forest lodge with an interesting exhibition of forestry history, ethnology, tools and means of transport. The mountain trail from Planina to Mirna gora is at the same time a forest educational trail with seven stands, equipped with boards describing the characteristics of the forest, trees, herbs and fauna of Mirna gora. It is also home to brown bears, lynxes, wild boars, wolves and other mammals, as well as forest partridges, wild roosters, falcons, woodpeckers, kangaroos, hawks and owls. The top of Mirna gora is not scenic because it is overgrown with forest; it is 10 minutes away from the mountain lodge.

The idyllic village of Planina is located in the Municipality of Semič at the southern foot of Mirna gora on a karst plateau at an altitude of 773 m. The former inhabitants, the Gottscheers, called it Stockendorf and it denotes a derelict land, a place, from which burnt tree trunks have been cleared (bei den Stocken Dorf).

Semic

Highlight • Settlement

The small town of Semič is located in the middle of the karst plain of Bela Krajina. The best way to reach Semič, which is surrounded by vineyards, is through the "gates" of Bela Krajina and along the Črmošnjice valley.

Malikovec Karst Cave

Highlight • Cave

Malikovec is a small karst cave. The total length of the tunnels is 80 m and the maximum depth is 28 m. It is accessible via a steep descent. In the central part of the room there is a collapsing hall (30 x 15 meters), which opens with a crack in the ceiling. In the southern part of the hall is the entrance to a 15-meter-long horizontal tunnel that ends in a chasm. The cave is located in the hinterland of the Krupa spring. It was originally formed by local underground currents and secondarily by corrosion processes. The ignition is modest. The cave was heavily polluted. In 1994 it was cleaned and made available for visitors. We must behave in the caves in such a way that as few traces of our visit remain as possible. This is our duty to nature and the visitors behind us

Mirna gora is a 1047 m high, forested peak located on the southeastern edge of Kočevski rog. There is no view from the peak, which has an entry box and stamp, due to the aforementioned forest. Mirna gora is also one of the highest peaks in Bela Krajina, a region in southeastern Slovenia.

The mountain lodge is located just below the peak of Mirna gora in the southeastern area of Kočevski Rog. In the immediate vicinity of the lodge is the renovated church of St. Francis Xavier and a lookout tower. View: There is a very beautiful view from the lodge or from the renovated church tower. To the east, below us is Bela Krajina with Metlika and Črnomlje, and on the other side of the Kolpa is Croatia towards Karlovac; to the south, we can see the Poljansko gorovje nearby, behind it the mountains of Gorski Kotar with Klek and the peaks of Velika Kapela; to the west, Kočevski Rog spreads out; to the north, we can see part of Gorjanci with Trdinov vrh and Žumberak, and in front of it, Smuk and Semenič, which rise above Semič. The Divji potok stream, which has its source above Srednja vasja near Črmošnjice, has created a very varied and picturesque riverbed on the dominant dolomite bedrock, full of waterfalls, pools and rapids.

September 29, 2024, Mirna Gora Summit (1047 m)

The summit of Mirna Gora is half a kilometer above the bell tower. Because it is in the middle of the forest, there is no view from the actual summit.

Old village. Among other things, there is a transport sledge and a cart on display, which show how heavy logs were transported in the past. Very interesting!
