Maribor's main bridge over the Drava (popularly known as the Stari Most, or Old Bridge) was built between 1909 and 1913. It replaced a previous wooden bridge a few meters further west. The bridge, which was an important part of the transport connection between Vienna and Trieste in Austria-Hungary, is 274 meters long, 122 meters of which actually span the Drava. Since 2023, the Splavarska Brv pedestrian and cyclist bridge has been docked to the Old Bridge.

The Basilica of Our Lady of Mercy is one of seven basilicas in Slovenia and was the first church with this title in Austria-Hungary in 1906. It is the home church of the Maribor Franciscan monastery. The current church and monastery were built between 1892 and 1900 in neo-Romanesque style and stand on the site of the former Capuchin church, which was built in the 17th century at the request of Count Jakob Khiesl of Maribor. The façade is decorated with two 58-meter-high bell towers, topped with a peaked roof and three-meter-high gilded crosses. The church has three entrances decorated with stone carvings. The most richly decorated is the main portal with a mosaic in the lunette depicting the Annunciation of Mary.

St. John the Baptist Cathedral (Maribor)

Highlight • Religious Site

The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist (Stolna cerkev sv. Janeza Krstnika) is the seat of the Archdiocese of Maribor. The first documented mention of a church on this site dates back to 1248, but there must have been a Christian church nearby even before that, probably from 1096. The cathedral is built from blocks of grey and yellowish Slovenian Gorica sandstone. The core of the church is Romanesque, and additions and alterations followed in Gothic, Baroque and 20th century architecture. The bell tower was built between 1623 and 1624. The church became a cathedral on September 4, 1859, when the bishop's seat was moved to Maribor.

The Water Tower on the Drava in Usnjarska Street received its current form in 1555. It is a late Renaissance fortress that protected the southeastern part of the city walls on the bank of the Drava. Before the Italian fortification builders reinforced the walls of Maribor in the 16th century, two round defensive towers stood on their southern part: the predecessor of the present Jewish Tower and, on the site of the present Water Tower, a round tower called Smodniški.

Maribor Castle

Highlight • Castle

Maribor's City Castle on the north-eastern edge of the old town is the most beautiful and largest building in the city. Today it houses the Regional Museum. The castle, on the site of the castle begun in 1478 by Emperor Frederick III, was built from 1655 by Count Brandis and his successors and was continuously expanded until 1843. The clock tower dates from 1780. The castle was once the strongest fortress in the city, equipped with two courtyards, of which the one intended for the riding school is very large. The portal to the castle square is decorated with a large stone lion.

The name of the monument "Spomenik NOB" refers to the Narodnoosvobodilni boj (abbreviation NOB). This is the name given to the resistance of the people of Yugoslavia against the occupiers during the Second World War in the years 1941-1945. The leading role in organizing the uprising was played by the Communist Party of Yugoslavia (KPJ) under the leadership of Josip Broz-Tito.

Judicial Tower

Highlight • Monument

The Court Tower (Slovene: Sodni stolp), also known as the Harbor Tower, is a 16th-century defensive tower on the left bank of the Drava River in the old town of Maribor in eastern Slovenia.

The building's name refers to its alleged former function as a court or prison.

The tower stands on the site of its predecessor, built in 1310 and demolished in 1532. Between 1548 and 1562, the tower was rebuilt under the direction of Italian master builders who also built the Maribor Town Hall (Rotovž). At that time, it was one story lower and covered with a conical roof. In the 19th century, it was extended and used as a warehouse. In 1937, it burned down, causing the roof and wooden floors to collapse. The building was rebuilt from 1957 to 1960, with the roof structure and roof covering reconstructed. In 2021 it was completely rebuilt to serve as a cultural center for events.
