Celje Castle is arguably the most famous and largest castle ruin in all of Slovenia. In the Middle Ages, it was the seat of the Celje family – one of the most powerful aristocratic families in Europe. The castle, like the city center of Celje, is surrounded by greenery. Slovenia's largest medieval castle, a fortress on top of the hill, still towers over all roads leading to the center of Celje. After a tour, you can relax in the picturesque surroundings. https://www.visitcelje.eu/de/produkt/fuehrungen-durch-die-alte-burg-von-celje/

The trail runs directly along the lake, over wooden boardwalks, beautifully landscaped gravel paths, and across the floating bridge, sometimes shaded, sometimes in full sun, is truly beautiful. The hike around the lake is rather modest, as the road portion is estimated at over 90%. No, this isn't nature-based hiking; that's life-threatening. Conclusion: Stay by the lake, walk, swim, and drink coffee. Thumbs up for that. Frank Häfner, August 20, 2025

Hom is a 1,870-foot (570 m) hill on the edge of the Posavje Hills above the city of Celje. Covered by trees, it's not a summit that provides an awesome panorama but it's a worthy objective that can be hiked straight from the city centre. A short hike to the west of the hill is Planinski dom na Brnici, a charming mountain hut that's open every day apart from Mondays and public holidays.

This footbridge across the Savinja crosses from the flat pastures to the west of the city towards the Posavje Hills, which are renowned for their vineyards. From here, it's a relatively short hike to the Planinski dom na Brnici hut, from where you can venture to the forest-covered Hom or head for Kotečnik, a beloved sport climbing venue. The Savinja is one of Slovenia's great rivers and is a tributary of the Sava.

Planinski dom na Brnici is a mountain hut on the northern slopes of the Posavje Hills. It enjoys great views towards the nearby peak of Kotečnik, one of Slovenia's best sport climbing locations, and to the forested peak of Hom. The lodge serves good home-cooked food and is open during the summer months, except on Mondays.
