A short detour to the Doghouse Junction Summit will lead you to the top, where you will find some towers and antennas. You can also see a nice view of the surrounding peaks from here. This is a nice add-on to the Otay Mountain Summit if you want to add an extra challenge.

The Otay Mountain Truck Trail intersects with the Minnewawa Truck Trail here at Doghouse Junction. This isn't the technical summit, but some of the best views on the entire mountain are from right here. You can keep running past these cell towers to the actual peak if you want.

Otay Mountain is the tallest peak in the San Ysidro Mountains standing at 3,568 feet. There are a handful of old service roads that lead to the top that are great for running. Some of the roads are still open to cards, but some are now closed to vehicles and only open to bikes and foot-traffic. The views from the top are of the border of Mexico and back towards Chula Vista. Mother Miguel Mountain is an easy peak to pick out from up here.

Yes, dogs are generally permitted in the Otay Mountain Wilderness, but they must be kept on a leash at all times. The trails are very exposed with little shade, so ensure you bring plenty of water for both yourself and your dog, especially on warm days.
No special permit is required for day hiking in the Otay Mountain Wilderness. However, the area is managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and is subject to specific rules and occasional closures. It's always a good idea to check for the latest updates on the official BLM website before you go.
The best seasons for hiking are fall, winter, and spring, when temperatures are cooler. Spring is particularly beautiful, as the hillsides are often covered in wildflowers. Summer can be extremely hot and dry, with little shade on the trails, making hiking challenging and potentially dangerous.
Yes, for a gentle and family-friendly outing, the Lower Otay Reservoir via West Trail is an excellent choice. It's a mostly flat 4-mile (6.5 km) path that follows the scenic shoreline of the reservoir and is suitable for all skill levels.
The main access for many hikes, including the popular Otay Mountain Truck Trail, is from the west near Pio Pico RV Resort and Campground off Otay Lakes Road. Be aware that access gates may be locked. Some routes, like the Minnewawa Truck Trail, have access points from the east. A high-clearance vehicle is often recommended for the rugged access roads.
The area is a hotspot for biodiversity. You might spot mule deer, California gnatcatchers, orange-throated whiptails, and coast horned lizards. The wilderness is also a critical habitat for the endangered Quino checkerspot butterfly. While rare, mountain lions are also present in the region, so it's important to be aware of your surroundings.
Most of the primary routes in the wilderness, like the main truck trails to the summit, are out-and-back hikes. However, you can create a challenging loop by combining trails. For example, the Otay Mountain and Doghouse Junction route is a long, difficult loop of over 16 miles (26 km) that explores a large portion of the wilderness.
Most trails follow wide, unpaved truck trails. The terrain is rugged, exposed, and can be steep and challenging, with significant elevation gain on summit routes. The surfaces are often uneven and rocky. Due to the proximity to the border, you may also encounter U.S. Border Patrol vehicles on these trails.
Essentials include plenty of water (more than you think you'll need), sun protection like a hat and sunscreen, and sturdy hiking shoes. The weather can change, so layers are a good idea. Since the trails are remote, navigation tools, a first-aid kit, and snacks are also highly recommended.
The summit of Otay Mountain offers spectacular 360-degree panoramic views. On a clear day, you can see the Pacific Ocean, the cityscapes of San Diego and Tijuana, the Otay Lakes, and the mountains stretching into Mexico. The Otay Mountain via Otay Mountain Truck Trail is a challenging but rewarding hike to this viewpoint.
While many people hike solo, it's important to be prepared. The area is remote, cell service can be unreliable, and the terrain is challenging. Always inform someone of your route and expected return time. Be aware of your surroundings due to the proximity to the international border and the presence of wildlife.
The area is highly rated by the komoot community. Reviewers often praise the stunning panoramic views from the higher elevations, the sense of solitude on the trails, and the unique experience of hiking in a rugged landscape so close to the U.S.-Mexico border. The beautiful spring wildflower displays are also a frequently mentioned highlight.
