Nowhere in this area can you get views like this as easily as you've made it here! Glacier Peak, Evergreen Mountain and the Monte Cristo range are to the north and Mounts Baring and Index to the west. Have lunch on the small summit which is sure to be crowded on a sunny weekend day. About half a dozen hikers can perch comfortably among the rocks at one time. Be careful though, as there is an unforgiving sheer cliff at the northern edge.

Mount Sawyer is the central and most popular peak of Tonga Ridge, a mountain ridge line along one of the northern borders of the Alpine Lakes Wilderness of Washington State. Tonga Ridge actually has three distinct high points, but the west and east peaks are unnamed and have little-to-no views from their summits. Conversely, Mount Sawyer has great views in each direction, from the summit and surrounding upper slopes of the mountain.

Like many of the lakes in the area, Lake llswoot is a deep blue lake surrounded by a mountain vista. Depending on the water level, there are platform-like rocks you can use to go wading.

This is a large lake hidden just south of Tonga Ridge in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness. Reached by a brushy, boot-beaten fisherman's path, it is less visited than many lakes in the area, but the route is marked on the map, and if you are willing to put up with a bit of inconvenience, this makes a nice day hike or overnight.

Yes, the region has several options suitable for families. For a very accessible and educational walk, the Deception Falls National Recreation Area offers a half-mile interpretive loop that's great for all ages. Another excellent choice is the Iron Goat Trail, which follows a historic railway grade. It has an ADA-accessible section and fascinating interpretive signs about the area's railroad history, making it both a hike and a history lesson.
The area is famous for its waterfalls. Wallace Falls State Park is a top destination, featuring a trail that passes nine distinct waterfalls, with viewpoints at the lower, middle, and upper falls. For a more challenging hike that rewards you with a stunning waterfall, the trail to Lake Serene includes a spur path to the dramatic, 205-foot Bridal Veil Falls.
Dog policies vary by trail and land manager. In general, dogs are permitted on-leash in Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, which includes many trails like the Beckler Peak Trail. However, dogs are typically not allowed in designated watershed areas or on certain sensitive trails within state parks. Always check the specific regulations for the trail you plan to hike before you go.
It depends on where you're hiking. For trailheads within national forests, like those for the Alpine Lakes Wilderness or Wild Sky Wilderness, you will likely need a Northwest Forest Pass for parking. For access to Wallace Falls State Park, a Discover Pass is required. Passes can usually be purchased online or at local vendors. Always check the trailhead information for the specific pass required.
The prime hiking season is typically from July through September when higher elevation trails are snow-free and the weather is generally drier. Lower elevation trails, especially those in the river valleys, can often be hiked from late spring through fall. Winter brings heavy snow, making most trails suitable only for snowshoeing or backcountry skiing.
Yes, the Skykomish area is a gateway to serious backcountry adventures in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness. The hike to Lake llswoot via the Necklace Valley Trail is a difficult, 15.9-mile (25.6 km) route that is popular for overnight trips, offering access to a chain of beautiful alpine lakes.
Access to many trailheads is via U.S. Forest Service roads, which can be affected by weather, washouts, or seasonal closures. Before you go, it is essential to check the current road conditions on the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest website or by calling the Skykomish Ranger District office. Community-sourced trail reports can also provide recent updates.
The region is renowned for its stunning alpine lakes. For a moderate day hike, the Tonga Ridge Trail to Fisher Lake offers beautiful scenery within the Alpine Lakes Wilderness. For those seeking a more strenuous but rewarding option, the Rock Lake Trail is another fantastic choice that leads to a pristine mountain lake.
Both are federally designated wilderness areas offering rugged, beautiful terrain, but they have distinct characteristics. The Wild Sky Wilderness, which includes trails like the Eagle Lake Fisherman's Trail, is known for its lower-elevation old-growth forests and river valleys. The Alpine Lakes Wilderness is generally higher in elevation, characterized by its vast number of lakes, granite peaks, and expansive alpine meadows. Both require adherence to Leave No Trace principles.
The routes around Skykomish are rated by the komoot community with an average score of 3.0 stars. Hikers often praise the classic Pacific Northwest scenery, including the lush old-growth forests, the abundance of waterfalls, and the stunning views from the peaks and ridges.
