June 18, 2024, Barden Reservoir and Historic Cemetery

From this spot on the Central Pike (be aware of cars!) you get great views on both sides of the Barden Reservoir. Just west of the bridge on a small peninsula historic cemetery where Civil War Veterans are buried. Interestingly, there are a few more historic cemeteries near by along Ponagansett Road, which part of a pleasant walking loop on a mix of gravel and dirt, and paved roads around the reservoir.

Thompson, a charming New England town. It was named after Sir Robert Thompson, an English landholder. There are a few historic buildings and a lovely church.

Make the most of this fairly wild and natural pond as you ride past. Keep your eyes pealed for wildlife and specifically birds who like the nest in the area. This is a cool road to ride on as the narrow tarmac meanders its way between lakes with awesome views on either side.

February 1, 2024, The Trestle Trail

The Trestle Trail is best known for its 5-mile paved path that shares a route with the Coventry Greenway. This extra section west of the Moosup River leaves the pavement and becomes a rough double-track road. The path is utilized by hikers, runners, cyclists, and ATVs. It also offers access to the Carbuncle Pond area.

The stone dam from the early 19th century provides a picturesque view of the Five Mile River and carries a rich history, once serving as part of a textile mill. This bridge point offers an excellent spot to appreciate the beauty of the surroundings.

The area is home to one of the earliest textile mills in Connecticut. Unfortunately, in 1861, the mill burned down, and it was never reconstructed. Numerous remnants of the mill, including a stone house situated on the corner, can still be found at the site.
