Beautiful green shimmering lake. Very natural. Trips with "wooden barges" are offered.

In my opinion, you should start the tour from the Seehotel and start to the left of the lake, then you have the great panorama in front of you on the way back and no cars.

Beautiful lake! If you want to go to the Kammersee, a small lake directly behind the Toplitzsee, you can take the traditional wooden boat typical of the region, a Plätte. This is the only way to get to the "Traunsprung" a waterfall behind the Kammersee and to the lake. The price for the return trip is 11 euros. You then have about half an hour to walk to the lake before it goes back again - it's easy. :)

The Ostuferweg am Almsee is highly recommended. Beautiful views of the lake from a trail only. There are a few benches on the shore for a break to enjoy the view. On the other side of the lake you walk along the road.

Very clocky hut. Very nice host. There are no showers but the washroom is relatively spacious. The drying room is not heated. Definitely a worthwhile destination for a hike in a picturesque setting. There is a lake below the hut

The lakes around Hinterstoder are renowned for their picturesque settings, crystal-clear waters, and stunning mountain reflections. From the artificial beauty of Schiederweiher, often called the 'pearl of the Stodertal', to the tranquil nature reserve of Almsee, each lake offers a unique natural charm and a peaceful retreat into the alpine landscape.
The Schiederweiher is widely celebrated, having been voted the most beautiful place in Austria in 2018, known for its perfect reflections of the Totes Gebirge mountains. Other popular choices include the Almsee, a serene nature reserve, and Gleinkersee, known as one of Austria's warmest alpine lakes.
Yes, several lakes offer family-friendly options. The path to Schiederweiher is a well-developed gravel path suitable for families, taking about 30-40 minutes. The Almsee East Shore Trail is also ideal for families, offering an idyllic setting for a stroll. Gleinkersee features spacious recreation lawns and a flat walk around the lake that takes about 30-45 minutes.
Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities. At Gleinkersee, you can swim, sunbathe, or engage in water sports like boating, kayaking, and stand-up paddleboarding. Fishing is also popular there and at Almsee. All lakes offer excellent opportunities for hiking, nature observation, and photography, especially with the stunning mountain reflections.
Swimming is possible in some lakes. Gleinkersee is particularly known as one of Austria's warmest alpine lakes, with water temperatures reaching up to 25°C, making it ideal for swimming. While Schiederweiher is beautiful, it is an artificial lake and primarily enjoyed for its scenic views and reflections rather than swimming. Almsee is a nature reserve, and while a path circles the lake, it's more for wildlife observation and hiking.
Absolutely. Many lakes are surrounded by hiking opportunities. You can find easy walks, such as the circular paths around Schiederweiher and Gleinkersee, or more challenging mountain hikes. For a comprehensive overview of trails, explore the Hiking around Hinterstoder guide, or for more demanding routes, check out Mountain Hikes around Hinterstoder.
The lakes are beautiful year-round. Spring and summer offer lush greenery, warmer temperatures for swimming at Gleinkersee, and ideal hiking conditions. Autumn provides stunning fall foliage, while winter transforms the landscape into a serene, snow-covered wonderland. Schiederweiher, for example, is considered worth visiting at any time of the year.
While specific cafes and pubs vary by lake, areas like Gleinkersee have facilities for visitors. For example, the Pühringerhütte, located near Elmsee, offers accommodation and food for hikers. The fisherman's hut is located directly on the shores of Lake Toplitz. It's advisable to check local listings for specific options near your chosen lake.
Yes, especially at Almsee, which is a nature reserve. It's a paradise for songbirds and water birds, with 35 different species counted. The area was famously studied by Nobel laureate Konrad Lorenz for its grey geese. The tranquil environment around many of the lakes provides opportunities to spot various local flora and fauna.
Yes, Lake Toplitz is another unique destination. Known for its depth of over 100 meters, it offers traditional wooden boat trips to the smaller Kammersee and the 'Traunsprung' waterfall, providing a distinct experience from the other lakes in the region.
For those interested in cycling, there are gravel biking routes in the wider Hinterstoder area. You can find options ranging from moderate to difficult, such as the 'Polsterstüberl Inn – Schiederweiher loop from Hinterstoder'.
