October 20, 2024, Märkisches Museum Witten

The Märkisches Museum was founded in 1886 by the Association for Local and Regional History in the County of Mark (VOHM) as an industrial, commercial and mining history museum, and as a whole as a historical local history museum. After three provisional locations, the VOHM built the Märkisches Museum on what is now Husemannstrasse between 1909 and 1911 with the help of a donation from the manufacturer Friedrich Lohmann. It combined paleontological, geological, mineralogical, biological and cultural history collections (the latter included the Engelbert statue and the Strünkede tombstone, among others). A commercial and industrial history collection was not successful. An extensive library on local history and the history of Westphalia, legal, church and medical history was added to the collections. The archive became an essential part of the collections (including the oldest documents on Witten's history and the region's newspaper history). A coin and medal collection was later added (German (ecclesiastical) territories before 1800, medals on the topics of Otto von Bismarck, aviation, Christine von Braunschweig, wife of Emperor Charles VI). Until the 1920s, art was only collected to the extent that it was related to the region and documented historical conditions. Wilhelm Nettmann, director of the museum from 1953 to 1978, continued the work in the field of modern art. During his term of office, the museum was expanded to include the neighboring Villa Berger, which today houses the Witten Cultural Forum. Under his successor Wolfgang Zemter, director of the house from 1978 to 2009, the museum was closed from 1985 to 1988, restored and significantly expanded. The principle of open-plan rooms was adopted in order to continue the dialogic structure of the collection presentation with contemporary means. https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/M%C3%A4rkisches_Museum_Witten

January 28, 2024, Harkort Tower

The Harkortturm, a lookout tower on the Harkortberg in Wetter (Ruhr), was built in 1884 in memory of Friedrich Harkort. The design by Düsseldorf architects Otto van Els and Bruno Schmitz won an architectural competition, although the construction costs were ultimately higher than planned. With a height of 35 meters, the tower offers a panoramic view over the Harkortsee to the Sauerland. Its architecture imitates medieval castles and is part of historicism. The tower originally housed a restaurant with a pavilion and beer garden before it was transferred to the municipality of Wetter in 1907. In 2009, a renovation was carried out to mark the 125th anniversary. The Harkort Tower is a listed building and is part of the Industrial Heritage Route. It is an important architectural monument and a popular tourist destination that combines history, architecture and picturesque views.
