The Oberelchingen run-of-river power plant has two vertically positioned Kaplan turbines. Previously, the power plant chain operated in "surge mode" when the Danube River was low. Part of the water was dammed overnight at the upper weir in Oberelchingen. During the morning peak load, this surge of water was channeled through the power plant chain, allowing the full power plant capacity to be utilized. https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kraftwerk_Oberelchingen
