It's a historic yet romantic place, closely linked to Altenburg's intellectual history. It definitely needs more attention! The buildings and the surrounding grounds appear very neglected!

Ehrenberg Castle was first mentioned in 1244 and the current complex was built mainly in 1887 in the Neo-Renaissance style.

The collegiate church, to which the twin towers belonged, is said to have been consecrated in 1172 in the presence of Frederick Barbarossa and Udo of Naumburg. The documents proving this, however, have proven to be forgeries.[1] The church was built in the Romanesque style from 1165 to 1172 out of bricks.[3] The wooden roof trusses of the towers date from 1336.[1] The collegiate church had a bad reputation among the reformers and was dissolved in 1543.[2] Just a few decades later, the nave had fallen into disrepair, but the west tower remained intact. In 1618, the north tower received its baroque roof.[2] The city took over the buildings after the monastery was dissolved and set up a school in them in 1665. 20 years later, the towers were converted into a prison and served as such for 200 years.[1] At the beginning of the 17th century, the nave was rebuilt and from 1669 to 1671[1] a widows' and orphans' home was set up in it. The building took on its current form in the 19th century: in 1810[1] it was rebuilt after a fire and in the middle of the century a half-timbered building was added. It was used as a prison and workhouse. The master builder Friedrich Sprenger carried out extensive repairs to the tower complex from 1871 to 1873[1] and removed some extensions. During the GDR era, a museum for medieval craftsmanship was located in the Red Tips until 1972. In June 2013, a permanent exhibition on the building opened, so that it can now be visited regularly again. For a deep dive into history, Altenburg Palace is highly recommended. It served as a ducal residence and features the Castle and Playing Card Museum, ducal apartments, and the historic Schlosskirche with its Trost organ. You can trace centuries of history, including the famous "Altenburger Prinzenraub".
Yes, several castles cater to families. Posterstein Castle is particularly known for its interactive "Die Kinderburg" (The Children's Castle) exhibition, allowing young visitors to explore with treasure maps and dress-up options. Altenburg Palace also offers family-friendly experiences with its museums and extensive park.
Absolutely! Posterstein Castle offers breathtaking panoramic views from its 25-meter high observation platform, extending to the Erzgebirge mountains on clear days. While technically in Saxony, nearby Burg Gnandstein also provides magnificent views of the surrounding Kohrener Land from its tower.
The region showcases a diverse range of architectural styles. Residenzschloss Altenburg blends Renaissance, Baroque, and English landscape styles within its park and features late Gothic elements in its church. Renaissance Schloss Ponitz is a prime example of Renaissance architecture, while Burg Gnandstein (just across the border) is one of the oldest and best-preserved Romanesque fortifications in the broader region.
The castles are enjoyable year-round, but spring and summer offer pleasant weather for exploring the castle parks and surrounding areas. Many castles host events and festivals during these warmer months. Autumn brings beautiful foliage, while winter can offer a magical, quieter experience, especially with Christmas markets at places like Schloss Ponitz.
Beyond the main attractions, Windischleuba Castle offers a unique experience. Originally built in 925 and later rebuilt as a manor, it now houses a youth hostel, and its castle garden is open to the public. Tannenfeld Castle and Park is another hidden gem, offering peace and quiet, especially beautiful when the rhododendrons are in bloom.
Renaissance Schloss Ponitz is noted for its accessibility, with the castle and its courtyard being barrier-free. This makes it a comfortable and enjoyable visit for all ages and mobility levels.

Beyond the prominent castles, Altenburg boasts other significant historical landmarks. The Red Spires are the remains of a former monastery, built around 1172, and serve as a symbol of Altenburg. The Altenburg Market Square itself is a historical site, and the Lindenau Museum offers further cultural exploration.
Parking availability varies by castle. For instance, Tannenfeld Castle and Park lists parking as one of its amenities. For other castles, it's advisable to check their official websites or local information for specific parking facilities and potential fees, especially in town centers like Altenburg.
