The predecessor of today's facility was probably a fort-like moated castle. Today's three-storey complex encloses a square courtyard, the fourth side of which is delimited by a shield wall with a tower. The main and entrance wings to the south are framed by two square corner towers.

Kannawurf was originally a fort-like water castle.

Weissensee Old Town

Highlight • Settlement

The town hall of the town of Weißensee was first mentioned in 1351 but has existed since 1200. This can be seen inside, as the original stone house is well preserved.
It is worth taking a look inside. Later extensions were added, which is why the year 1547 is written on the entrance. This makes the town hall in Weißensee the oldest in Thuringia and one of the oldest in Germany. Ollendorf Moated Castle

Highlight • Castle

Eckstedt Castle

Highlight • Castle

There is evidence that the castle was built in 1556. In 1560, the last Vitztum von Eckstedt sold the castle to Friedrich Anton von Mandelsloh. Later the castle passed to the sons. The Mandelsloh leased the property in 1784 to the Landcomissary Simon Ehrenfried Mirus [1], who bought it in 1820 [2] and held it until his death in 1835, before the owners often changed. The park was created in 1836. In 1860 the castle was demolished because it was in disrepair. In 1878 it was bought by Franz Kreiter, who replaced the castle with a new neoclassical building in 1882/3. From this it was acquired by the Secret Finance Councilor Friedrich Edmund Schwanitz in 1899, and in 1915 it went to Heinrich Gertzen from Bitterfeld. Rudolf Harnisch bought it in 1927.

In 1945 the landowner Rudolf Harnisch was expropriated in accordance with the land reform laws in East Germany. A home for apprentices and a machine rental station were set up on the estate and in the farm buildings.

In 1992 the former estate was empty.

In 2002 the castle was sold again. Since then, the new owner has been restoring and refurbishing the castle.

A Romanesque building at its core, it has been redesigned several times. The façade was redesigned in the 16th century and again in 1840. One of the oldest historic town halls in Germany.

The moated castle, dating back to the 14th century, is abandoned and falling into disrepair. In 2019, it still served as a hostel.

In 1564, Georg II Vitzthum von Eckstedt built the Renaissance castle Kannawurf on the estate, which had been in the family since 1539; there were also three other manors in the village. Inscriptions on doors and windows date from between 1563 and 1565. Instead of a medieval moated castle, a three-wing complex was built around an almost square inner courtyard by around 1570, the fourth side of which is closed off by a shield wall with a central round tower. A row of dormer windows decorates the roof. With this form of the so-called castle type, Georg II Vitzthum cited the construction of the new Dresden residential palace of Elector Moritz of Saxony, in whose service he was a marshal, which began around 1547. Owned by the Thuringian Monument Preservation Center and the Thuringian Artists' House since 2007, the partially renovated castle is now used for cultural events. Source: Wikipedia
