Our mountain guesthouse has seen many a proud face after the steep climb. The guesthouse, in its current form, has existed since 1860, making it one of the oldest mountain inns in Switzerland. Pastor Ulmann was the first hermit to live in the hermitage in the Wildkirchli in 1658. More than 20 men followed his example until 1853, shaping the history of the Wildkirchli as hermits and first hosts. Since then, this mystical place has fascinated generations. Stories are told of little wild people who are said to have once lived in the Wildkirchli caves and come to the aid of the herdsmen. The Aescher inspires poets and artists to create new works. Bones of cave bears and stone tools bear witness to the cave as an ancient shelter. Source: https://aescher.ch/

Plattenbödeli mountain inn since 1911 at 1284 m above sea level. Unique landscape in the Alpstein. 1911 - Innkeeper Jos. Anton Dörig "Mattle" (great-grandfather of Platte Hans and grandfather of Meglisalp Mile) bought a piece of land at the exit of the Brüeltobel and built a small guesthouse, which he soon handed over to his daughter Franziska Inauen-Dörig. 1917 - Handed over to daughter Franziska Fritsche-Inauen. 1930 - Alfred Fritsche built the current inn. 1934 - Electric light was used for the first time on the Plattenbödeli, powered by a single-cylinder diesel engine and an Örlikon battery. 1958 - Son Hans and Alice Fritsche-Holderegger bought the business. To remedy the water shortage, a 1000m long pipe was laid from the Alp Rainhütte through the lake. The spring is 60m higher than the Plattenbödeli and thus the water flows into the reservoir with counter pressure. The diesel system was enlarged and a dishwasher and a washing machine were installed. 1964 - The mule track through the Brüeltobel is expanded as a road. 1971 - The kitchen is added, the toilet facilities are converted and the restaurant with a self-service buffet is renovated. The main entrance is moved to the sunny side and the terrace is extended. A separate sewage treatment plant is built and the diesel system is renewed. 2022 - Alois and Manuela Inauen Sager purchase the mountain inn. The Schäfler mountain inn boasts of its special panoramic view. And rightly so, if the weather conditions are right. Then you can admire Lake Constance, Säntis, Altmann and all the southern mountain ranges. The drinks and food are also recommended: e.g. Rösti in its various variations :-) You can reach the mountain inn on foot in about 4 hours from Wasserauen, or for those in a hurry from the mountain station of the Ebenalpbahn in about 1 hour. There are also a large number of overnight accommodation options. For couples, I find the 2-person cabin rooms very cute and also acoustically relaxing. In summer, the Säntis summit can be reached from the mountain inn in about 4 hours. But many other destinations are also easy to reach from there.

The Meglisalp is an alpine settlement in the Swiss canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden. It lies at 1517 m above sea level in a flat hollow in the Alpstein region east of the Säntis. In the local dialect it is called [megli'salp]. The alp was already documented in the Middle Ages (1071 Megelinsalpa, ca. 1280 Megilins alpe).[1] The Meglisalp is a popular excursion destination in summer and can be reached from Wasserauen via the Seealpsee, among other places. In addition to the Meglisalp mountain inn, the settlement also has a chapel. https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meglisalp

Several huts in Eastern Switzerland are great for families. The Aescher-Wildkirchli Mountain Inn is listed as family-friendly and offers a unique experience carved into the rock. The Kronberg Summit also has family-friendly amenities. Additionally, Berggasthaus Forelle by Seealpsee is an excellent choice for families seeking a serene natural setting, and Chamonna Tuoi Hut is near the Schellen Urseli theme trail, which features activities related to a famous Swiss children's book.
Yes, the Aescher-Wildkirchli Mountain Inn is steeped in history, existing in its current form since 1860. It's located near the Wildkirchli Chapel and Wildkirchli Caves, where hermits once lived and cave bears' bones were found. This mystical place has inspired generations and is considered one of Switzerland's most visited sites.
Eastern Switzerland offers breathtaking panoramic views from many huts. The Staubern Mountain Inn provides an overwhelming view overlooking four countries (Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Austria, and Germany). The Schäfler Mountain Inn is renowned for its special panoramic views of Lake Constance, Säntis, and Altmann. Legler Hut also offers spectacular opportunities to watch the sunrise and sunset over the Glarus region.
For stunning natural settings, consider the Bollenwees Mountain Inn at Fälensee, which is located directly on the idyllic Fählensee. The Plattenbödeli Mountain Inn at Lake Sämtiser also offers a beautiful lakeside experience. For glacier views, the Boval Mountain Hut is reached by hiking along the Morteratsch glacier and offers a fascinating panoramic view from its terrace. The Forno Hut also provides spectacular views of the Forno glacier.
The Ela Hut SAC is considered an insider tip for gourmets, offering a genuine alpine experience with 'pure nature' and a feeling of being well-cared for. Chamanna Jenatsch SAC provides peace and seclusion at the end of the Val Bever, making it ideal for those seeking a quiet retreat.

Chamanna Georgy is the highest hut in the Engadine and Graubünden, situated at 3,175 meters just below the summit of Piz Languard, offering fantastic high-alpine views and frequent sightings of ibex and marmots. Chamanna Jenatsch SAC is also the highest SAC hut in Graubünden, providing a remote and elevated experience. The Pizol Hut, at 2,222 meters, offers wonderful mountain panoramas and is a starting point for the famous 5-lake hike.
Many huts, like Meglisalp Mountain Inn and Staubern Mountain Inn, are known for their excellent regional specialties and good food. Some, like the Ela Hut SAC, are even considered an 'insider tip for gourmets.' While many SAC huts offer basic but cozy communal sleeping arrangements, some have been renovated to provide private rooms, such as Legler Hut, which offers mattress bunks, double, and single rooms.
The best time to visit typically depends on the specific hut and your desired activities. Many huts are open during the summer hiking season, from late spring to early autumn, when alpine roses surround huts like Boval Mountain Hut. During peak season, huts can book out quickly, so reservations are highly recommended. Some huts may also offer winter experiences, but access and conditions can be more challenging.
Accessibility varies by hut. Some huts, like Schäfler Mountain Inn, can be reached on foot from mountain stations like Ebenalp, which is accessible by cable car. For others, a scenic hike is required, such as the moderate 2-hour hike to Berggasthaus Forelle. While specific parking details for each hut are not always available, many trailheads leading to huts are accessible by public transport or have designated parking areas. It's advisable to check specific access details for your chosen hut.
Yes, the Boval Mountain Hut serves as a meeting point for mountaineers, many of whom start early to trek on the glacial ice of the Morteratsch glacier. The Forno Hut is also a crucial starting point for various tours between Bergell, Engadin, and Italy, often involving more challenging alpine routes.
