Top 20 Waterfalls in Rhineland-Palatinate

The bridge sways slightly but is still easy to walk on. In the middle, there are benches on each side.

After the old bridge was washed away in a storm in 2021, this amazing suspension bridge was built. Walking across it is an experience; it swings and makes you feel like you're on the high seas 😂. There are two benches at the highest point for resting, but I'm not sure if that's good for you 🤢?

Unfortunately, one can no longer call it a waterfall; perhaps the name "Irrel Canyon" would be more appropriate? But regardless, it's a beautiful piece of nature, and nature is constantly changing. The damaged old wooden bridge has since been replaced by a suspension bridge.

The so-called Dreimühlen waterfall is also known as the Nohn waterfall. The name Nohn waterfall comes from the waterfall's proximity to the town of Nohn. The houses on the outskirts of Nohn are only a few hundred meters above the waterfall. Most people talk about the Dreimühlen waterfall, however. The name Dreimühlen comes from a former castle called Dreimühlen. Today, however, only the remains of the walls are said to remain. We looked for the former castle on our trip, but couldn't find anything of it. The waterfall in the Eifel is located between the towns of Üxheim, Kerpen and Nohn. Although the other large towns in the Eifel are not located here, many visitors come here. Some of them travel especially to visit the waterfall. The Dreimühlen waterfall is one of the most visited Eifel attractions. Almost every holidaymaker in the area comes to the waterfall at least once during their Eifel vacation. In addition, many day tourists travel from outside, making it the most visited waterfall in the Eifel. They all want to see the unique natural wonder.

The old version of a crossing of the river Prüm at the well-known "Irrel Waterfalls" was a covered (roofed) wooden bridge, which was much more modest than the current construction. The new construction was necessary because the heavy rain disaster of July 2021 devastated large parts of the Eifel and washed away the old bridge here too.

In 2021, a century-long flood destroyed a popular wooden hiking bridge 100m upstream. This suspension bridge was built in 2023 and has been accessible since September 30th. A hiking car park is located in the immediate vicinity. Both small barrier-free sightseeing tours and short and long, more sporty and rocky hikes are possible from here. The term waterfalls is historical. Even saying rapids would be an exaggeration compared to the past.

Information from the nature park: Accessible from September 30th, 2023 https://www.naturpark-suedeifel.de/naturerlebnis/haengebruecke-irreler-wasserfaelle The assembly of the new suspension bridge 100 meters downstream from the old location in the direction of Irrel has been completed, as has the construction of the associated access roads. The signage will also soon be completed, so that the suspension bridge will be open from Saturday, September 30th, 2023. Parking spaces and footpaths For people with limited mobility, there are parking spaces near the "Irreler Waterfalls", where there are disabled parking spaces. There are also additional parking spaces at the Irreler Mitte, on Omesen and Op der Lupp in Irrel, at the Teufelsschlucht Nature Park Center and Dinosaur Park in Ernzen and on Bornstrasse in Ferschweiler. Please note our parking guidance system. If you park in Irrel, follow the designated footpath of approx. 1.5 km to the suspension bridge. The footpath is also connected to the Irrel Central Bus Station (ZOB). The suspension bridge is about 1.8 km away on foot from the Teufelsschlucht Nature Park Center, and about 2.2 km from the Teufelsschlucht. If you want to hike to the suspension bridge, you can park in Ferschweiler (Bornstraße); the footpath is about 5.8 km to the bridge. It is also possible to travel by public transport.
