Our mountain guesthouse has seen many a proud face after the steep climb. The guesthouse, in its current form, has existed since 1860, making it one of the oldest mountain inns in Switzerland. Pastor Ulmann was the first hermit to live in the hermitage in the Wildkirchli in 1658. More than 20 men followed his example until 1853, shaping the history of the Wildkirchli as hermits and first hosts. Since then, this mystical place has fascinated generations. Stories are told of little wild people who are said to have once lived in the Wildkirchli caves and come to the aid of the herdsmen. The Aescher inspires poets and artists to create new works. Bones of cave bears and stone tools bear witness to the cave as an ancient shelter. Source: https://aescher.ch/

The Meglisalp is an alpine settlement in the Swiss canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden. It lies at 1517 m above sea level in a flat hollow in the Alpstein region east of the Säntis. In the local dialect it is called [megli'salp]. The alp was already documented in the Middle Ages (1071 Megelinsalpa, ca. 1280 Megilins alpe).[1] The Meglisalp is a popular excursion destination in summer and can be reached from Wasserauen via the Seealpsee, among other places. In addition to the Meglisalp mountain inn, the settlement also has a chapel. https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meglisalp

Great place to enjoy some lovely food/beverages with magnificent and iconic views. The route leading up to the Hörnlihütte can be challenging if it is icy, so be prepared with the right equipment in any case.

Switzerland offers a diverse range of mountain accommodations, from basic shelters to modern, serviced huts and mountain inns. Many are operated by the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC). The Chamonna Tuoi Hut is near the Schellen Urseli theme trail, and the Rugghubelhütte above the Engelberg Valley is also known for being family-friendly with easy access options. The Aescher-Wildkirchli Mountain Inn is also listed as family-friendly.
The Aescher-Wildkirchli Mountain Inn is one of Switzerland's oldest mountain inns, existing in its current form since 1860, with a history of hermits and cave dwellers. This hut is carved into the rock of the Alpstein Mountains and is a must-see historical site.
Swiss mountain huts are renowned for their stunning locations and panoramic views. Many offer breathtaking vistas of glaciers, peaks, and valleys. For instance, the Britannia Hut provides spectacular views over the Hohlaub and Allalin glaciers. The Staubern Mountain Inn offers an overwhelming view overlooking four countries (Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Austria, Germany) and the Alpstein mountains. The Cabane de Moiry boasts a huge glass facade in its dining room for views of the Moiry glacier, and the Monte Rosa Hut offers panoramic views between the Gorner and Grenz Glaciers.
Yes, some huts are more easily accessible. The Lidernen Hut, for example, is only a 500-meter walk from the top of a gondola, making it ideal for families and beginners. The Rugghubelhütte is also easily accessible from the Ristis mountain station. While many huts require significant hiking, options exist for various experience levels.
The areas around Swiss huts offer a wide range of outdoor activities. You can enjoy various hiking experiences, from moderate trails like the 'Gratwanderweg Stoos' or 'Creux du Van Trail' to more challenging mountain hikes such as the 'Route to Breithorn' or 'Pinut Via Ferrata Entry'. Many huts serve as bases for mountaineering, climbing, and ski touring. For more hiking ideas, explore the Hiking in Switzerland guide, and for mountain-specific challenges, see the Mountain Hikes in Switzerland guide.
The best time to visit Swiss mountain huts largely depends on the activity. Most huts are open during the summer hiking season, typically from June to October, when trails are clear of snow. Some huts, especially those at lower altitudes or with easier access, may open earlier or close later. For winter activities like ski touring, specific huts are open, often with different services. Always check the opening times of individual huts before planning your trip.
Yes, most serviced Swiss mountain huts provide both food and accommodation. They typically offer hearty, energy-rich meals, often featuring traditional Swiss dishes, which are especially welcome after a day of hiking. Accommodation usually ranges from dormitory-style mattress bunks to private rooms in more modern facilities. Huts like Meglisalp Mountain Inn and Staubern Mountain Inn are known for their excellent food and overnight stays.
Absolutely. Switzerland is home to huts that blend tradition with innovation. The Monte Rosa Hut, for instance, is a striking example of modern architecture and sustainable design, serving as a research project for renewable energies. The Cabane de Moiry features a huge glass facade offering panoramic glacier views. These huts provide a contemporary alpine experience while still offering the essential shelter and camaraderie of traditional mountain huts.
Visitors frequently highlight the unique blend of adventure, natural beauty, and hospitality. The stunning locations provide unparalleled views, and the sense of camaraderie among travelers sharing meals and stories is a cherished aspect. Many appreciate the authentic alpine experience, from the hearty food to the accessibility of remote trails. The Hörnli Hut (Matterhorn Base Camp), for example, is enjoyed for its magnificent views and the experience of hut life, even without attempting the Matterhorn summit.
Yes, many huts are situated near impressive natural features. The Bollenwees Mountain Inn is located directly at Fälensee, offering beautiful lake views. The hike to the Sardonahütte passes through the incredible Batoni waterfall arena. For more routes featuring waterfalls, you can explore the Waterfall hikes in Switzerland guide, which includes trails like 'Areuse gorges' and 'Murgsee pleasure tour'.
Many Swiss huts are strategically placed for exceptional views. The Staubern Mountain Inn is famous for its views over four countries. The Aescher-Wildkirchli Mountain Inn offers a panoramic view from Ebenalp. The Legler Hut provides panoramic views of the Glarus region, ideal for sunrise and sunset. The Mönchsjoch Hut, one of Switzerland's highest serviced huts, offers views between the Jungfraujoch and Mönch peak.
